Pinpoint Test A: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Illuminated Continuously
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln MKX and 2007 Ford Edge. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Do not handle, move or change the original horizontal mounting position of the restraints control module (RCM) while the RCM is connected and the ignition switch is ON. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety canopy and cause serious personal injury or death.
WARNING:
Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, safety canopy or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
WARNING:
Never probe the electrical connectors on safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of the safety belt pretensioners or adaptive load limiting retractors, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.
CAUTION:
Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE:
The supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE:
Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough Inspection and Verification before proceeding with the Pinpoint Test.
- A1 CHECK FOR CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND DTCs
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: RCM Self Test/Retrieve and Record On-Demand and Continuous Memory DTCs
- Were any continuous memory or on-demand self test DTCs retrieved?
- YES
: If continuous memory DTCs were retrieved, go to A2.
If on-demand DTCs were retrieved, go to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart for pinpoint test direction.
- NO
: If the RCM does
communicate with the scan tool, go to A2.
If the RCM does not communicate with the scan tool, REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK to diagnose the HS-CAN concern. Go to A4.
- A2 CHECK FOR INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE ON-DEMAND DTCs
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Self Test/Retrieve and Record On-Demand and Continuous Memory DTCs
- Were any continuous memory or on-demand DTCs retrieved?
- YES : REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND PANEL ILLUMINATION to diagnose instrument cluster module concerns. Go to A4.
- NO
: If the instrument cluster module does
communicate with the scan tool, go to A3.
If the Instrument Cluster Module does not communicate with the scan tool, REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK to diagnose the HS-CAN concern. Go to A4.
- A3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULE
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Module Active Command - All_Lamp
- Does the air bag warning indicator turn ON and OFF when using the active command?
- YES : INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to Restraints Control Module (RCM) . Go to A4.
- NO : INSTALL a new instrument cluster module. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Go to A4.
- A4 CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL DTCs
- Refer to the continuous memory DTCs recorded during Step A1.
- Were any continuous memory DTCs retrieved during Step A1?
- YES : Do not clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. Go to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart for pinpoint test direction.
- NO : RECONNECT the SRS. RETEST the communication to the RCM. If previously directed to depower the SRS, REPOWER the SRS REFER to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering . PROVE OUT the SRS. CLEAR all RCM DTCs.
