Pinpoint Test V: The Wrench Indicator Is Never/Always On

- V1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command
- Enter the instrument cluster control mode and select ETC_IND. Command the wrench indicator on and off. Observe the indicator.
- Does the wrench indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?
- V2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM AND TCM SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded PCM and TCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any PCM or TCM DTCs recorded?
- YES
: For TCM DTCs, REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 6F50
.
For PCM DTCs, REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines .
- NO
: If equipped with AWD, go to V3.
If not equipped with AWD, go to V4.
- V3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND 4WD CONTROL MODULE SELF-TESTS
- Check for recorded 4WD control module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any 4WD control module DTCs recorded?
- YES : REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS .
- NO : Go to V4.
- V4 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TCM WRENCH REQUEST
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster PID
- Select and monitor the instrument cluster TCM wrench request PID, WR_LMP_TCM.
- Does the TCM wrench request PID read YES?
- V5 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL WRENCH REQUEST PID
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster PID
- Select and monitor the instrument cluster electronic throttle control wrench request PID, WR_LMP_ETC.
- Does the electronic throttle control wrench request PID read YES?
- V6 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 4WD CONTROL MODULE WRENCH REQUEST PID
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster PID
- Select and monitor the instrument cluster 4WD control module wrench request PID, WR_LMP_4X4M.
- Does the 4WD control module control wrench request PID read YES?
- V7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- V8 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4WD CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all the 4WD control module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the 4WD control module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new 4WD control module. REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- V9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
