Brake Pedal and Bracket: Removal

    NOTE: When removing the adjustable pedal assembly, make sure the pedals are adjusted to the full forward position.
  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  2. CAUTION: The brake pedal must be connected to the brake booster rod and in the at-rest position before removing the speed control deactivation switch, or the switch will be damaged.
  3. Remove the speed control deactivation switch.
  4. Disconnect the brake booster rod redundant self-locking clip cover and the self locking clip.
  5. Remove the stoplamp bushing, spacer and the brake booster rod from the brake pedal and position the stoplamp switch aside.
  6. Disconnect the adjustable pedal motor electrical connector.
  7. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
    1. Release the retainer from the grommet.
    2. Release the grommet from the accelerator.
    3. Position the accelerator cable assembly aside.

  8. Remove and discard the 4 brake booster nuts.
  9. Position the brake master cylinder and brake booster assembly forward to allow the brake pedal assembly to clear the studs.
  10. Remove the 3 adjustable accelerator pedal bracket nuts.
  11. Remove the 2 wiper arms.
  12. Remove the cowl grille.
    • The grille is secured with 14 spring clips. Pull upward on the grille to release the clips.
  13. Remove the instrument panel-to-cowl support bolt.

  14. Remove the front floor console. For additional information, refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .
  15. Remove the 4 nuts and 4 bolts from the LH and RH instrument panel support brackets and position the 2 support brackets aside.

  16. Remove the 2 door scuff plates.
  17. Remove the retainer and the 2 A-pillar lower trim panels.
  18. Remove the 2 instrument panel side finish panels.
  19. Remove the 2 A-pillar passenger assist handles.
    • Remove the 4 passenger assist handles caps.
    • Remove the 4 bolts and the assist handles.
  20. Remove the 2 windshield side garnish moldings.
  21. Remove the defroster grille.
  22. Remove the duct bolt and the top instrument panel-to-cowl bolt.

  23. Remove the 2 steering column opening cover screws and the steering column opening cover panel.
  24. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected, or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence the steering column shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and centered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
  25. Secure the steering wheel to prevent it from rotating.
  26. Remove the steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt and separate the steering shafts.
  27. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the bulkhead electrical connector.
  28. Remove the 4 side instrument panel-to-cowl support bolts.
  29. Position the instrument panel approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) away from the dash panel.
  30. Remove the brake pedal assembly from the vehicle.
