Test Ax: Check Fuel Cap Indicator Never/Always On

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. Clear PCM DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform PCM self-test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If any PCM DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problems. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command WARNING LAMPS AND CHIMES. Trigger ALL LAMPS to ON, then OFF. CHECK FUEL CAP indicator should illuminate when triggered ON and should not illuminate when triggered OFF. If CHECK FUEL CAP indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If CHECK FUEL CAP indicator does illuminate, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
Check instrument cluster for loose or corroded harness connectors. Ensure all harness connectors are fully seated. Operate system and verify that concern is still present. If concern is still present, replace instrument cluster. If not system is operating properly, concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
