Contact Assembly (CLOCKSPRING): Installation
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Ensure steering shaft alignment mark is at 12 o'clock position. Install contact assembly.
- If installing original contact assembly, remove tape. If installing NEW contact assembly, remove plastic locking insert. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

- Connect battery cables. Check air bag diagnostics. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. On models receiving NEW clockspring, remove key from clockspring rotor.
- On models needing clockspring recentering, ensure wheels are in straight ahead position. Hold clockspring outer housing stationary. While turning rotor clockwise, feel for ribbon wire to run out of length, and a slight resistance to be felt. Stop turning at this point. Turn rotor counterclockwise 2-2.75 turns. DO NOT allow rotor to turn from this position.
- On all models, ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove restraint system diagnostic tool from vehicle harness side of clockspring electrical connector at steering column. Connect clockspring electrical connectors.
- On models reusing same clockspring, remove tape applied during removal procedure. On all models, align large slot to large tab in clockspring. Align small slot to small tab on clockspring.
- With slots and tabs aligned, slide clockspring over steering column. With clockspring sitting flush against multi-function switch, install screws.
- Install lower steering column shroud. On models with tilt steering column, position steering column downward. On all models, position upper shroud to steering column and completely engage retaining tabs. Ensure upper steering column shroud aligns correctly, and retaining tabs are completely engaged. Install steering wheel and air bag. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG .
- If installing a new clockspring, remove key from clockspring. DO NOT allow clockspring rotor to turn. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position. If clockspring rotated out of center, center clockspring. Hold clockspring outer housing stationary. Depress clockspring locking tab to release rotor. While holding clockspring locking tab into released position, turn rotor counterclockwise, carefully feeling for ribbon wire to run out of length, and a slight resistance to be felt. Stop turning at this point. While holding clockspring locking tab in released position, turn rotor clockwise 3 turns. Release clockspring locking tab. Lock rotor in centralized position.
- On all models, align clockspring onto steering column shaft. Slide clockspring down steering column shaft, and lock clips into place. Engage lower clockspring retaining clip into place. Remove restraint system diagnostic tool from vehicle harness side of clockspring electrical connector at base of steering column. Connect clockspring electrical connectors. Route wire harness into 2 holders.
- Install key-in-ignition warning indicator switch to steering column. Install Passive Anti-Ttheft System (PATS) transmitter. Position upper steering column shroud to steering column. Install lower steering column shroud. Tighten 4 steering column-to-instrument panel retaining bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- On models with tilt steering column, install tilt wheel handle and shank. On all models, align and install ignition switch lock cylinder to steering column. Position ignition switch lock cylinder to OFF position. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Install steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG .
- Attach restraint system diagnostic tool to clockspring electrical connector at top of steering column. Connect battery ground cable. With restraint system diagnostic tools installed at all deployed devices, prove out air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Disconnect battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Position lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement. Install bolts, and tighten to 27 INCH lbs. (3 N.m). Install lower steering column opening finish panel. Position hood release handle, and install screws. Remove restraint system diagnostic tool from clockspring electrical connector at top of steering column. Position driver bag air module to steering wheel. Install 2 driver air bag module retaining bolts.
