Test J: Charge System Warning Indicator Never/Always On

Check charging system operation. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, repair charging system as necessary. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command WARNING LAMPS AND CHIMES. Trigger ALL LAMPS ON, then OFF. Charging system indicator should illuminate when triggered ON and should not illuminate when triggered OFF. If charging system indicator operates as specified, go to next step. If charging system indicator does not operate as specified, replace instrument cluster.
Using NGS tester, retrieve and record continuous Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. Clear PCM DTCs. Using NGS tester, perform PCM self-test. If any PCM DTCs are retrieved, repair code related problems. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V (GASOLINE) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no PCM DTCs are retrieved, problem may be intermittent or a module communication problem may exists between PCM and instrument cluster.
