Test H: Safety Belt Warning Indicator Inoperative/Erratic

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor instrument cluster PID D_SBELT while buckling and unbuckling driver's seat belt. With seat belt buckled, PID should display IN. Without seat belt buckled, PID should display OUT. If PID displays as specified, go to next step. If PID does not display as specified, go to step  3 .
  2. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME. Trigger ALL LAMPS ON. If safety belt warning indicator does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster. If safety belt warning indicator illuminates, system is okay at this time.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect seat belt switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire) at seat belt switch harness connector. Using NGS tester, monitor instrument cluster PID D_SBELT. With jumper wire connected, PID should display IN. Without jumper wire connected, PID should display OUT. If PID displays as specified, go to next step. If PID does not display as specified and jumper wire fuse did not blow, remove jumper wire and go to step  5 . If PID does not display as specified and jumper wire fuse blows, remove jumper wire and go to step  6 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) at seat belt switch harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace seat belt switch. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between seat belt switch and ground.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220a. Measure resistance in White/Black wire between terminal No. 1 at seat belt switch harness connector and terminal No. 18 at instrument cluster harness connector C220a. See Figure . Resistance should be 5 ohms or less. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 18 (White/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220a. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If both resistances are as specified, go to next step. If either resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in White/Black wire between instrument cluster and seat belt switch.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 18 (White/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C220a. See Figure . If voltage does not exist, connect all disconnected components and go to step  2 . If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire between instrument cluster and seat belt switch.
