Test H: Tachometer Inaccurate

  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - CONTINENTAL article. If vehicle passes, go to next step. If vehicle does not pass, repair module communication concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - CONTINENTAL article.
  2. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command TCHOMETER. Trigger TCHOMETER on. Adjust scroll knob to zero percent. Tachometer reading should be approximately zero RPM. Adjust scroll knob to 50 percent. Tachometer reading should be approximately 3500 RPM. Adjust scroll knob to 100 percent. Tachometer reading should be approximately 7000 RPM. If tachometer did not respond as specified, go to next step. If tachometer responds as specified, system is okay at this time.
  3. Check Clean Tach Out (CTO) circuit for open or short, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If CTO circuit is okay, replace instrument cluster. If CTO circuit is faulty, repair as necessary. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
