Test D: Temperature Gauge Inaccurate

  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Perform data link diagnostics. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - CONTINENTAL article. If vehicle passes, go to next step. If vehicle does not pass, repair module communication concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - CONTINENTAL article.
  2. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster active command ENGCOOLNT. Trigger ENGCOOLNT on. Adjust scroll knob to zero percent. Temperature gauge reading should be at C (cold). Adjust scroll knob to 50 percent. Temperature gauge reading should be between the "O" and "R" in the word NORM. Adjust scroll knob to 100 percent. Temperature gauge reading should be at H (hot). If temperature gauge responds as specified, repair temperature sensor circuit. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If temperature gauge did not respond as specified, replace instrument cluster.
