Test J: Charge Warning Never/Always On

  1. Check charging system operation. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If charging system is operating properly, go to next step. If charging system is not operating properly, repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charging warning indicator is not on, go to next step. If charging warning indicator is on, go to step  4 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C256. Disconnect generator voltage regulator harness connector C154. Measure resistance in Light Green/Red wire between generator voltage regulator harness connector C154 and terminal No. 18 at instrument cluster harness connector C256. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Red wire.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C256. Disconnect generator voltage regulator harness connector C154. Measure resistance between ground and Light Green/Red wire terminal at generator voltage regulator harness connector C154. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire.
