Test AK: Dash Illumination Control Inoperative

  1. Place gear selector in Park. Ensure dimmer switch is not stuck in up or down position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, retrieve and document continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform Lighting Control Module (LCM) self-test. If neither DTC B1582 or B1586 are not retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1582 or B1586 is retrieved, replace LCM.
  2. Remove fuse No. 1 (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse box. Check fuse. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  5 .
  3. Measure voltage at input side of fuse No. 1 in instrument panel fuse box. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Tan wire between instrument panel fuse box and power distribution box.
  4. Install fuse No. 1 in instrument panel fuse box. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect LCM harness connector C207. Measure voltage at terminal No. 16 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at LCM harness connector C207. See Figure . If battery voltage exists, go to step  7 . If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Gray/Light Blue wire.
  5. Ensure fuse No. 1 in instrument panel fuse box is still removed. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect LCM harness connector C207. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 16 (Gray/Light Blue wire) at LCM harness connector C207. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Light Blue wire.
  6. Check for short to ground in Light Blue/Red wire between terminal No. 2 at LCM harness connector C207 and the following lights: ashtray, electronic day/night mirror, remote emergency satellite cellular unit console, heated seat switch assembly, clockspring harness connector C2012, clock, message center switch, electronic automatic temperature control module, console shift illumination, console cigarette lighter and instrument panel cigarette lighter. See ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. If short exists, repair as necessary. If short does not exist, check listed components for internal shorts and repair as necessary. If components are okay, replace LCM.
  7. Using a fused jumper wire, connect terminals No. 16 and 2 at LCM harness connector C207. If dash lights illuminate, replace LCM. If dash lights do not illuminate, repair open in Light Blue/Red wire.
