Test D: Fuel Gauge Inoperative

  1. Check Fuel Gauge

    Perform fuel gauge test. See FUEL GAUGE in COMPONENT TESTING. If fuel gauge is faulty, replace fuel level sensor and fuel pump. Retest system. If fuel gauge is okay, go to next step.

  2. Check Connector Seating

    Pull instrument cluster out far enough to verify that connector between instrument printed cluster board and instrument cluster is properly connected. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If connectors all properly seated, go to next step. If connector is not connected, properly install connectors. Retest system.

  3. Check Fuel Sensor For Open

    Disconnect fuel level sensor and fuel pump harness connector located under vehicle at fuel tank. Measure resistance of Black/Orange wire between ground and fuel level sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black/Orange wire. Retest system.

  4. Check For Open

    Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C237. Measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between C237 connector pin No. 10 and fuel level sensor connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between C237 connector pin No. 10 and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between C237 connector and fuel level sensor connector, and more than 10 k/ohms, between C237 connector and ground, repair or replace instrument cluster. Retest system. If resistances are not as specified, repair Yellow/White wire. Retest system.
