Test F: Voltmeter Inaccurate

  1. Check Voltage Gauge

    Ensure all electrical accessories are off. Turn ignition on. Check voltage gauge needle position. If needle is in correct range, system is okay. If needle reads in high range, check charging system for proper operation. If needle is in low range, go to next step.

  2. Check Connector Seating

    Pull instrument cluster out far enough to verify that connector between instrument printed cluster board and instrument cluster is properly connected. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If connectors all properly seated, go to next step. If connector is not connected, properly install connectors. Retest system.

  3. Check Fuses

    Check fuse No. 2 (5-amp) and No. 29 (5-amp) in fuse junction panel. If fuses are okay, go to step 6). If fuses are blown, replace fuses and retest system. If fuse No. 2 blows again, go to next step. If fuse No. 29 blows again, go to step 5).

  4. Check Red/White Wire For Open

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument panel harness connector C237. See Figure . Measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C237 pin No. 3 (Red/White wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair or replace instrument. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair open in Red/White wire. Retest system.

  5. Check Red/Yellow Wire For Short To Ground

    Measure resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C237 pin No. 11 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is more than10 k/ohms, repair or replace instrument. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair open in Red/Yellow wire. Retest system.

  6. Check Red/White Wire For Open

    Reinstall fuse No. 2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C237 pin No. 3 (Red/White wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/White wire. Retest system.

  7. Check Red/Yellow Wire For Open

    Reinstall fuse No. 29. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C237 pin No. 11 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. Measure voltage between instrument cluster harness connector C237 pin No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, repair or replace instrument cluster. Retest system. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire. Retest system.
