Charge System Warning Never/Always On
- Turn ignition on and observe charging system warning indicator. If charging system warning indicator is not on, go to step 6). If charging system warning indicator is on, go to next step.
- Start engine and observe charging system warning indicator. If charging system warning indicator is on, go to next step. If charging system warning indicator is not on, charging system warning indicator is operating properly at this time. Check battery and charging system for possible intermittent problem.
- Start engine. Connect voltmeter between positive and negative battery terminals. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and observe voltmeter. If voltage is more than 14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 14 volts, inspect battery and charging system. See appropriate GENERATOR article in the ELECTRICAL section.
- Turn ignition to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect HEIC connector C293. See Figure . Disconnect generator voltage regulator 3-pin connector. Measure resistance between ground and HEIC connector C293 terminal No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire and retest system. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Ensure HEIC connector C293 is disconnected. If charging system warning indicator is on, repair HEIC and retest system. If charging system warning indicator is off, replace generator and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect HEIC connector C293. See Figure . Measure voltage between ground and HEIC connector C293 terminal No. 26 (White/Light Blue wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 8).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator voltage regulator 3-pin connector. Measure resistance of Light Green/Red wire between HEIC connector C293 terminal No. 16 and generator voltage regulator connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 10). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Green/Red wire and retest system.
- Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect fuse No. 17 (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse panel. If fuse is okay, repair open in White/Light Blue wire between fuse panel and HEIC connector and retest system. If fuse is blown, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and HEIC connector C293 terminal No. 26 (White/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in White/Light Blue wire and retest system. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair HEIC and retest system.
- Reconnect HEIC connector C293. Connect jumper wire between ground and generator voltage regulator harness connector Light Green/Red wire. Turn ignition on. If charging system warning indicator is on, replace generator and retest system. If charging system warning indicator is not on, repair HEIC and retest system.
