Brake Warning Never/Always On

  1. Ensure brake fluid is at proper level and parking brake is released. Turn ignition on and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator proves out for 3 seconds and stays on, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator never comes on, go to step 6).
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Retrieve HEIC continuous and self-test DTCs. If DTC U1051 is present, see appropriate BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section. If DTC U1051 is not present, go to next step.
  3. Using NGS tester, access Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting (SCIL) control module PID PRK_BRK. If PID PRK_BRK reads ON, repair parking brake switch, connectors or wiring. If PID PRK_BRK does not read ON, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake fluid level switch. Turn ignition on and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator is on, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator is not on, replace brake fluid level switch and retest system.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect HEIC connector C294. See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and HEIC connector C294 terminal No. 12 (Black/Yellow wire). If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Yellow wire and retest system. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, repair HEIC and retest system.
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, select HEIC active command INSTRUMENT CLUSTER LAMP CONTROL. Trigger BRK WARN-ON and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator is on, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator is not on, repair HEIC and retest system.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake fluid level switch. Turn ignition on. Connect jumper wire between ground and brake fluid level switch harness connector Black/Yellow wire. Observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator is on, HEIC is operating properly at this time. Retest system. If BRAKE warning indicator is not on, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect HEIC connector C294. See Figure . Measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between HEIC connector C294 terminal No. 12 and brake fluid level switch connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair HEIC and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire and retest system.
