Test D: Steering Effort Does Not Vary With Vehicle Speed

  1. Check Speedometer Operation

Test drive vehicle and observe speedometer. If speedometer indicates correct speed, go to next step. If speedometer does not indicate correct speed, diagnose speedometer system fault. See INSTRUMENT PANEL article in SAFETY EQUIPMENT/ACCESSORIES.
  2. Check Speed Signal At Control Module

Turn air suspension off. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to diagnostic connector located in engine compartment near right shock tower. Perform function test 226. See FUNCTION TEST . Test drive vehicle and compare vehicle speed on scan tool with speedometer. If scan tool and speedometer do not agree, go to next step. If scan tool and speedometer agree and steering mechanical components are okay, replace control module. Retest system.
  3. Check Control Module Connector

Check control module connector C204 pins for corrosion or damage. Ensure wires are not crossed in connector. See Figure. Repair pin terminals if necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  4. Check VSS Circuit Resistance

Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 3 (Dark Green/White wire) and C204 pin No. 23 (Black/Light Green wire). See Figure. If resistance is not 180-240 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 180-240 ohms, check connector C204 pin terminals. Repair terminals if necessary and check system operation. If terminals are okay, replace control module.
  5. Check VSS Resistance

Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Measure resistance between VSS terminals (component side). If resistance is 180-240 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 180-240 ohms, replace VSS. Check system operation.
  6. Check Black/Light Green Wire For Open

Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 23 (Black/Light Green wire) and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. Check system operation.
  7. Check Dark Green/White Wire For Short To Ground

Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 3 (Dark Green/White wire) and ground. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair Dark Green/White wire for short to ground.
  8. Check Dark Green/White Wire For Open

Measure resistance of Dark Green/White wire between control module connector C204 pin No. 3 and VSS harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Dark Green/White wire.
  9. Check For Short Between Dark Green/White & Black/Light Green Wire

Reconnect VSS. Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 3 (Dark Green/White wire) and C204 pin No. 23 (Black/Light Green wire). If resistance is less than 180 ohms, repair short between Dark Green/White and Black/Light Green wires. Check system operation. If resistance is not less than 180 ohms, restore electrical connections and repeat step  2.
