DTC 45: Steering Wheel Rotation Not Detected

  1. Check Power Circuit

Disconnect steering wheel rotation sensor, 4-pin connector located at bottom of steering column. Measure voltage between steering wheel rotation sensor harness connector pin No. 4 (Purple/Orange wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to step  3. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  2. Check Ground Circuit

With steering wheel rotation sensor disconnected, measure resistance between steering column rotation sensor harness connector pin No. 1 (Black/Light Green wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. Check system operation.
  3. Check Red Wire To Control Module

Turn ignition off. Disconnect control module harness connector C204 (Black). See Figure. Reconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Turn ignition on. Rotate steering wheel 1/4 turn while measuring voltage between C204 pin No. 2 (Red wire) and ground. Voltage should fluctuate between zero and 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  5.
  4. Check Brown Wire To Control Module

Turn ignition off. Disconnect control module harness connector C204 (Black). See Figure. Reconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Turn ignition on. Rotate steering wheel 1/4 turn while measuring voltage between C204 pin No. 22 (Brown wire) and ground. Voltage should fluctuate between zero and 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, replace air suspension/EVO steering control module. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  6.
  5. Check Red Wire For Short To Power

Disconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Measure voltage between control module connector C204 pin No. 2 (Red wire) and ground. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  7. If battery voltage exists, repair short to power on Red wire. Check system operation.
  6. Check Brown Wire For Short To Power

Disconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Measure voltage between control module connector C204 pin No. 22 (Brown wire) and ground. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  8. If battery voltage exists, repair short to power on Brown wire. Check system operation.
  7. Check Red Wire For Short To Ground

Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 2 (Red wire) and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to step  9. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Red wire. Check system operation.
  8. Check Brown Wire For Short To Ground

Measure resistance between control module connector C204 pin No. 22 (Brown wire) and ground. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to step  10. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Brown wire. Check system operation.
  9. Check Red Wire Between Steering Sensor & Control Module

Disconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Measure resistance of Red wire between control module connector C204 pin No. 2 (Red wire) and steering wheel rotation sensor harness connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Red wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace steering wheel rotation sensor. Check system operation.
  10. Check Brown Wire Between Steering Sensor & Control Module

Disconnect steering wheel rotation sensor. Measure resistance of Brown wire between control module connector C204 pin No. 22 (Brown wire) and steering wheel rotation sensor harness connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Brown wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace steering wheel rotation sensor. Check system operation.
