Hub & Bearing Assembly (Front): Removal

  1. Turn air suspension switch, located in left side of trunk, to OFF position. See Figure or Figure . Turn ignition switch so steering column is in unlocked position.
  2. Remove and discard axle shaft nut. DO NOT  use an impact wrench to remove axle shaft nut. Remove washer from axle shaft. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel.
  3. Remove brake caliper and secure aside. Remove brake rotor. Remove and discard ball joint nut. Separate ball joint from lower control arm. Press axle shaft from hub. See Figure . Wire axle shaft so it is supported in a level position. Remove rotor splash shield (if damaged). Remove and discard 3 hub-to-steering knuckle bolts.
    CAUTION: Wheel hub is not pressed into steering knuckle. To prevent damaging hub, DO NOT  use a slide hammer or strike back of inner bearing race to try and remove a stuck hub. If hub is stuck, apply a rust penetrant to hub and steering knuckle mating surfaces and allow it to soak.
  4. Using a pry bar, carefully separate hub from steering knuckle. See Fig 1 .
