Strut Assembly: Inspection

  1. Gas-filled struts are neither adjustable nor refillable and are serviced as an assembly. Before a strut is replaced because it is suspected to be defective, perform following checks.
  2. Check all tire pressures. Check torque of all strut and suspension mounting bolts and nuts. Check strut for obvious external damage.
  3. Check for fluid leakage. A light film of oil on the upper portion of the strut is okay. If entire strut is covered with oil, replace strut.
CAUTION: Steering knuckle or spindle-to-strut bolts have locking material on threads. Loose bolts may seem to have correct torque when joint is actually loose. Replace bolts and tighten to specification.
