System Test B: Fuel Sender Circuit Failure DTC B1201, B1204

  1. Check Fuel Sender Gauge  - Ensure fuel tank contains at least 5 gallons of fuel. Turn ignition on. Wait one minute. If gauge indicates less than 1/4 full, go to next step. If gauge indicates at least 1/4 full, go to step 8).
  2. Check Circuit Voltage  - Backprobe between Yellow/White wire at fuel tank sending unit pigtail and ground. If voltage is not 1.1-3.4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, replace EIC, then retest system.
  3. Backprobe between Yellow/White wire at fuel tank sending unit pigtail and ground. If voltage is more than 3.4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 3.4 volts, go to step 5).
  4. Check Circuit No. 563  - Backprobe between Orange/Yellow wire at fuel tank sending unit pigtail and ground. If voltage is more than 3.4 volts, repair open Orange/Yellow wire between fuel tank sending unit and EIC. If voltage is not more than 3.4 volts, replace fuel tank sending unit, then retest system.
  5. Check Fuel Level Sensor  - Unplug fuel tank sending unit connector. Measure voltage between Yellow/White wire at harness connector and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or more, replace fuel tank sending unit, then retest system.
  6. Check Circuit No. 29  - Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between Yellow/White wire at harness connector and ground. If more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or less, repair short on Yellow/White wire.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove EIC, leaving connectors attached. See ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Backprobe between connector C256 terminal No. 4 (Yellow/White wire) and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Yellow/White wire between EIC and fuel tank sending unit. If voltage is 10 volts or more, replace EIC, then retest system.
  8. Check Fuel Gauge Accuracy  - Turn ignition off. Unplug fuel tank sending unit connector. Connect 152-ohm resistor between Yellow/White and Orange/Yellow wires at harness connector. Turn ignition on, wait for gauge to stabilize, then turn ignition off. Connect 18-ohm resistor between Yellow/White and Orange/Yellow wires at harness connector. Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, replace EIC, then retest system.
  9. Turn ignition off. Connect 152-ohm resistor between Yellow/White and Orange/Yellow wires at harness connector. Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge does not indicate full, replace EIC, then retest system. If fuel gauge indicates full, replace fuel tank sending unit, then retest system.
