Collapsed Lifter Clearance

Valve and/or valve seat refacing will diminish clearance and cause improper valve operation. Push rods are available in shorter and longer sizes to compensate for dimensional changes.
Disconnect terminals "I" and "S" at starter relay. Attach auxiliary starter to relay and battery. With ignition off, position No. 1 piston on TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse No. 1 intake valve lifter and hold lifter collapsed. Measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem with feeler gauge.
Using VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE table, position crankshaft and check appropriate valves. If clearances are not within specifications, replace push rods as necessary. See, in this article, COLLAPSED LIFTER CLEARANCE table.

NOTE: For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines prior to removal. Match mark engine hood and all other major components prior to removal.
