Inaccurate Fuel Indication

  1. Disconnect instrument panel harness (14401) connector from rear lights harness (14405) connector, under instrument panel at fuse block. Connect a 47-ohm resistor between Yellow/White wire of (14401) connector and ground. Place ignition switch in ACC position. Fuel gauge display should read 5-6 gallons (19-23 liters). If okay, turn ignition off and go to next step. If not, go to step 3).
    NOTE: Ignition must be off when connecting or disconnecting a resistor at harness.
  2. Connect a 100-ohm resistor between Yellow/White wire of (14401) connector and ground. Place ignition switch in ACC position. Fuel gauge display should read 13-14 gallons (49-53 liters). If okay, go to step 4). If not, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect EIM connector. Measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between EIM connector and 47-ohm and 100-ohm resistors connected to (14401) connector. Ohmmeter should read 47 ohms and 100 ohms, respectively. If reading is okay, replace EIM. If not, repair Yellow/White wire as required.
  4. Lower fuel tank to access fuel gauge sending unit. Using jumper wire, connect sending unit connector to ground. Measure resistance between Yellow/White wire in (14405) connector and ground. If reading is 0-1 ohm, go to step 5). If reading is greater than one ohm, repair Yellow/White as required.
  5. Check fuel gauge sending unit for binding, sticking or other damage. If sending unit is okay, go to next step. If not, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
  6. Check fuel tank for dents, bulges or other damage. If damaged, repair or replace tank as necessary. If tank is okay, fault is being caused by other vehicle system(s).
