Speedometer Reads "0" With Vehicle In Motion

  1. Place ignition switch in "ACC" position. Verify speedometer readout sequence. Sequence should display "188", go blank, and then display a "0" in this order. If sequence is okay, go to next step. If not, replace EIM.
  2. Check that odometer advances when vehicle is driven forward. If okay, replace EIM. If not, go to next step.
  3. Check connections between 14401 harness and 14290 harness connector, and between 14290 harness and 7C078 transmission harness (near transmission dipstick). Measure resistance between Black/White wire in 14401 to 14290 connector and Dk. Green/White wire in 14290 to 7C078 connector. Readings should be 160-230 ohms. If okay, go to step 6). If not, go to next step 4).
  4. Check connector at speedometer sensor on transmission. If connector is okay, go to next step. If not, repair connector and wiring as necessary. Recheck speedometer operation.
  5. Using ohmmeter, check resistance at speedometer sensor. Reading should be 200-300 ohms. If okay, go to next step. If not, replace speedometer sensor. Recheck speedometer operation.
  6. Disconnect speedometer sensor from transmission. Check condition of driven gear teeth and retainer clip. If okay, go to next step. If not, replace gear and/or clip as necessary.
  7. Check condition of drive gear on transmission output shaft. If okay, go to step 8). If not, replace/install transmission drive gear as necessary.
  8. Test drive vehicle and check operation of cruise (speed) control. If okay, go to next step. If not, check wiring to cruise control to verify correct location of Black/White and Dk. Green/White wires in connectors. Repair wiring as required.
  9. Test drive vehicle and check operation of message center elapsed mileage display. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, check wiring to message center to verify correct location of Black/White and Dk. Green/White wires in message center connector. Service as necessary.
  10. Check connectors to EIM. Check resistance between Pins No. 12 and 13 of EIM connector. Resistance should be 160-230 ohms. If okay, replace EIM. If not, service wiring, cruise control or message center as necessary.
