Display Erratic

  1. If display blinks on and off, go to next. If "CO" or "CS" is displayed intermittently, go to step 5). If fuel display varies more than 2 gallons, go to step 10).
  2. Place ignition switch in "ACC" position. Check operation of other EIM displays while display repeats condition. If other displays are normal, replace EIM. If other displays are erratic or blink, go to next step.
  3. Check message center display for proper operation. If okay, go to next step. If not, check for intermittent opens in Lt. Green/Purple and Lt. Blue/Pink wires (Circuit No. 293, 297 and 797) between EIM and message center. Repair as necessary.
  4. Check EIM Lt. Blue/Pink wire (Circuit No. 295), Lt. Green/Purple wire, and Black/White wire (Circuit No. 359) for intermittent opens, loose connections, or damaged wiring. If circuits are okay, replace EIM. If not, repair circuits as required.
  5. Place ignition switch in "ACC" position. Locate display test connector. On Continental, connector is taped to left courtesy light. On Mark VII, connector is attached to fuse block. Install jumper wire between test terminals.
  6. If display is unchanged, jumper wire is not making connection. Reposition jumper wire and retest. If display reads "01 F7", "F8 000118", or "F8 000116", go to next step. If not (anything else), replace EIM.
  7. Depress message center "MILES km" switch only once. Display should read "02 000000" (02 equals test number, 0's equal number of fuel system intermittent opens/shorts). If reading is correct, erratic condition occurred only once. No problem was found. If reading is incorrect, remove jumper. Turn ignition off and go to next step.
NOTE: On step 7), if vehicle has no mileage on odometer, a number may be displayed in place of "0". If this is the case, go to step 9).
  8. Check instrument cluster 14401/14405 connector and fuel gauge sending unit connector for dirt, looseness, or damage. If okay, go to next step. If not, clean or repair connectors and wiring as necessary. After service, go to next step.
  9. Place ignition switch in "ACC" position. Connect jumper wire to display test connector. Turn ignition off, wait 30 seconds, and return switch to "ACC" position. Message "01 FX 000118" should be displayed. Depress message center "MILES km" switch only once. If "02 000000" is displayed, go to next step. If not (anything else), repeat this step until "02 000000" is displayed. This step clears self-test of intermittent counts.
  10. Test drive vehicle over rough road. Repeat steps 5), 6), and 7). Verify display at end of step 7). If "02 000000" is displayed, display is okay. Remove jumper wire. If not (anything else), repeat step 8). If test fails again, replace EIM.
  11. Test drive vehicle and check speedometer operation. If speedometer is okay, lower fuel tank. Check fuel gauge sending unit for proper operation. Replace if necessary. If speedometer is not okay, perform SPEEDOMETER READS "0" WITH VEHICLE IN MOTION test.
