Fuel Gauge Display Erratic

  1. If display blinks on and off, proceed to step 2). If "CO" or "CS" is displayed intermittently, proceed to step 5). If fuel display varies more than 2 gallons, proceed to step 10).
  2. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" or "ACC". Check operation of other EIM displays while display repeats condition. If other displays operate normally, replace EIM. If other displays are also erratic or blink, proceed to step 3).
  3. Check message center display for proper operation. If okay, proceed to step 4). If operation not okay, check circuits 293, 297 and 797 between EIM and message center for intermittent opens. Service as necessary.
  4. Check EIM circuits 295, 797, and 359 for intermittent opens, loose connections, or damaged wiring. If circuits check okay, replace EIM. If circuits not okay, service as necessary.
  5. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" or "ACC". Locate the 2 terminal test connector (taped to left hand courtesy lamp on Continental, attached to fuse box on Mark VII) and jump the terminals. Check fuel gauge display. If display is unchanged, jumper wire is not making connection. Reinstall jumper and recheck display. If display reads 01 F X 000118, X = 5 or 6, proceed to step 6), (X character is encircled in circle symbol on digital display).
  6. Depress Miles/Km switch on message center once only. Display should read 02 000000 (02 = Test Number of 0's = Number of fuel system intermittent opens/shorts). If reading okay, condition was one time only occurrence and no problem was found. If reading not okay, turn ignition to "OFF", remove jumper, and proceed to step 7).
  7. Check EIC 14401 to 14405 connector and fuel sender connector for dirt, looseness or damage. If okay, proceed to step 8). If not okay, service connectors and wiring as necessary and proceed to step 8).
  8. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" or "ACC" and connect jumper to test connector. Turn switch to "OFF" and wait 30 seconds. Turn switch to "RUN" or "ACC" and check display. 01 FX 000118 should be displayed. Depress Miles/Km switch on message center once only. If 02 000000 is displayed, proceed to step 9). If any other display, repeat step 8) until 02 000000 is displayed, then proceed to step 9).
  9. Test drive vehicle over rough road and repeat steps 5) and 6). Verify display at end of step 6). If 02 000000 is displayed, vehicle okay, remove jumper. If any other display, repeat step 7). If test fails again, replace EIM.
  10. Test drive vehicle and check speedometer operation. If okay, lower fuel tank and check sender for proper operation. Service or replace as necessary. If not okay, proceed to ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETER test procedures, NO TRIP ODOMETER DISPLAYED in this article.
