Display Brightness Does Not Change With Dimming Control
- Check all other displays. Turn ignition to "RUN" or "ACC". Check dimming of other displays with headlight switch "ON" while rotating dimmer thumb wheel. If other displays dim, but fuel display does not, replace EIM. If no displays dim, proceed to step 2).
- Check dimming and operation of message center display. Turn on headlight switch and rotate dimmer thumb wheel. If dimmer works okay, proceed to step 8). If not okay, proceed to step 3).
- Check instrument panel fuse No. 13. If okay, proceed to step 5). If fuse not okay, proceed to step 4).
- Check for short in circuit 294. Before replacing fuse, turn ignition switch to "OFF". Check for short to ground in circuit 294 (White/Lt. Blue dots) with an ohmmeter at fuse panel. If no short exists, replace fuse. If short exists, service circuit 294 as necessary.
- Measure input voltage to fuse No. 13. If reading is greater than 10 volts, proceed to step 6). If reading is less than 10 volts, service circuit 294 at headlamp switch as necessary.
- Check illumination fuse No.4. If fuse is okay, proceed to step 8). If fuse not okay, proceed to step 7).
- Check for short in circuit 19. Before replacing fuse check for short to ground in circuit 19 (Lt. Blue/Red). If short exists, service circuit 19. If no short exists, replace fuse.
- Measure rheostat voltage and dimming potentiometer resistance. Remove electronic cluster from instrument panel and disconnect harness connector. Measure rheostat voltage at terminal 2 (circuit 19B; Lt. Blue/Red) to ground. Reading should be less than 3 volts with headlamp switch "OFF" and greater than 5 volts with headlamp switch "ON".
- Turn ignition switch "OFF" and measure voltage changes between terminal 16 (Brown/White) and ground. Voltage should range from full battery voltage in the CCW position to 1/2 battery voltage in the full CW position. If positive readings were attained in steps 8) and 9), replace EIM. If negative results attained, service electrical circuit 294 between EIM connector and headlamp control switch.
