Valve Springs: Removal

  1. Remove rocker arm cover and spark plug on cylinder to be serviced. Be sure piston is at top of stroke with both valves closed. Install air line with adapter in spark plug hole.
    NOTE: If air pressure fails to hold valve closed, remove cylinder head for inspection of valve seat.
  2. Remove required rocker arms and push rods. On 302" & 351" W engines, remove exhaust valve stem caps. Use suitable spring compression tool (T62F-6565-A or 6513-HH for 302" & 351" W engines; T70P-6049-A for 351" M & 400" engines), to compress valve and remove retainer locks, sleeve (on 302" & 351" W engines only), spring retainer (or valve rotator) and valve spring. Remove and discard valve stem seal. Do not remove air pressure as this will allow valves to fall into cylinder if piston has been forced to bottom of cylinder.
    NOTE: On 351" M and 400" engines, exhaust valves are equipped with valve rotators instead of spring retainers.
