Removal [08/2020 - ]: Procedure

  1. DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    NOTE:
    • w/ Navigation System (for HDD):

      After the engine switch is turned off, the display and navigation module display (HDD navigation system) records various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, be sure to wait for the time specified in the following table before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      Waiting Time before Disconnecting Cable from Negative (-) Battery Terminal

      Condition Waiting Time
      Vehicle enrolled in safety connect system 6 minutes
      Vehicle not enrolled in safety connect system 1 minute
    • When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (Refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2019 - 08/2021] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2021 - 08/2022] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [08/2022 - ] ).
  3. DRAIN ENGINE OIL 

    See step  1[08/2015 - 08/2020], or see step  1[08/2021 - ]

  4. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  5. REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the radiator (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] ).
  6. REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD 
    1. Remove the intake manifold (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2015 - ] ).
  7. REMOVE COOLER COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the cooler compressor (Refer to REMOVAL [08/2020 - ] ).
  8. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP AND HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 24

  9. REMOVE AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY 
  10. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 26

  11. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  12. REMOVE AIR TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  13. REMOVE AIR SWITCHING VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Bank 1) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  14. REMOVE AIR SWITCHING VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Bank 2) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  15. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE 
    1. for Engine Room LH Side:

        Disconnect the injector connector.

      2. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil connectors.
      3. Disconnect the 2 VVT sensor connectors.
      4. Disconnect the noise filter connector.
      5. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
      6. Disconnect the 2 camshaft timing oil control valve connectors.
      7. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
      8. Disconnect the 6 clamps.
      9. Disconnect the cooler compressor connector.

      for Engine Room RH Side:

      1. Disconnect the 2 camshaft timing oil control valve connectors.
      2. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil connectors.
      3. Disconnect the injector connector.
      4. Disconnect the 2 VVT sensor connectors.
      5. Disconnect the noise filter connector.
      6. Remove the bolt and ground wire.
      7. Disconnect the 6 clamps.
      8. Disconnect the power steering oil pressure switch connector and solenoid valve connector.

        Disconnect the wire harness clamp.

      10. Remove the bolt and disconnect the wire harness clamp bracket.

      Remove the bolt and disconnect the clamp and engine wire.

  16. REMOVE OIL FILTER ELEMENT 

    See step  4[08/2015 - 08/2021], or see step  4[08/2021 - ]

  17. REMOVE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    See step  3

  18. REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and filter bracket.

      Remove the 2 O-rings.

  19. REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK GUIDE

  20. DISCONNECT VANE PUMP ASSEMBLY

      Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the vane pump.

  21. REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 8

  22. REMOVE NO. 4 ENGINE COVER 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  23. REMOVE NO. 3 ENGINE COVER 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  24. REMOVE FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the EFI fuel pipe clamp.

      Remove the 2 bolts and fuel tube (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - ] ).

  25. REMOVE FUEL HOSE 
    1. Remove the EFI fuel pipe clamp.

      Disconnect the clamp and remove the fuel hose (Refer to PRECAUTION [08/2015 - ] ).

  26. DISCONNECT HEATER WATER HOSE

      Disconnect the 2 heater water hoses.

  27. REMOVE NO. 4 WATER BY-PASS PIPE

      Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the No. 4 water by-pass pipe.

  28. REMOVE WATER BY-PASS HOSE

      Remove the water by-pass hose.

  29. REMOVE NO. 1 WATER BY-PASS HOSE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

      Disconnect the hose.

    2. Remove the 2 bolts and water by-pass pipe.

      Remove the 3 bolts and water inlet housing.

      Remove the gasket from the timing chain cover.

      Remove the 4 nuts, water by-pass joint and 2 gaskets.

      Remove the 5 bolts and fan bracket.

  39. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt, 6 mm hexagon bolt and belt tensioner.

  40. REMOVE NO. 4 AIR TUBE

      Remove the 2 bolts and 2 wire harness clamp brackets.

      Remove the bolt, 2 nuts, 2 stud bolts and No. 4 air tube.

    3. Remove the gasket from the No. 4 air tube.
      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the installation surface of the gasket.

      Remove the 2 bolts and 2 wire harness clamp brackets.

      Remove the bolt, 2 nuts, 2 stud bolts and No. 3 air tube.

    3. Remove the gasket from the No. 3 air tube.
      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the installation surface of the gasket.

  42. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  43. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Remove the 14 bolts, seal washer, cylinder head cover and gasket.

      HINT: 

      Make sure the removed parts are returned to the same places they were removed from.

    2. Remove the 5 gaskets from the camshaft bearing caps (No. 2, No. 3).

  44. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Remove the 14 bolts, seal washer, cylinder head cover and gasket.

      HINT: 

      Make sure the removed parts are returned to the same places they were removed from.

    2. Remove the 5 gaskets from the camshaft bearing caps (No. 1, No. 3).

      Using SST, remove the crankshaft pulley set bolt.

      • SST: 09213-70011 
      • SST: 09330-00021

    2. Temporarily install the pulley set bolt to the crankshaft until 2 or 3 threads are engaged.
    3. Using the pulley set bolt and SST, remove the crankshaft pulley.

    1. Remove the 26 bolts and nut shown in the illustration.

    2. Remove the timing chain cover by prying between it and the cylinder head and cylinder block with a screwdriver as shown in the illustration.

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

      NOTE:

      Be careful not to damage the cylinder head, camshaft housing and cylinder block contact surfaces of the chain cover.

    3. Remove the gasket from the cylinder block.

      Remove the O-ring from the oil pan.
