Disassembly [08/2015 - ]: Procedure

  1. REMOVE OIL FILTER ELEMENT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4 [08/2015 - 08/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4 [08/2021 - ]

  2. REMOVE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  3. REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 18 , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 18 [08/2020 - ]

  4. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 45 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 45 [08/2020 - ]

  5. REMOVE OIL FILLER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
    2. Remove the gasket from the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  6. REMOVE OIL FILLER CAP HOUSING 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts, oil filler cap housing and gasket.

  7. REMOVE SPARK PLUG 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  8. REMOVE KNOCK SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  9. REMOVE VVT SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  10. REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  11. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PROTECTOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  12. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  13. REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  14. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. for Bank 1:

      Remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft oil control valve assemblies.

    2. for Bank 2:

      Remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft oil control valve assemblies.

  15. REMOVE CYLINDER BLOCK WATER DRAIN COCK SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 water drain cock plugs from the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assemblies.

    2. Remove the 2 cylinder block water drain cock sub-assemblies from the cylinder block sub-assembly.
  16. REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING

  17. REMOVE FRONT WATER BY-PASS JOINT 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 35 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 35 [08/2020 - ]

  18. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 43 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 43 [08/2020 - ]

  19. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 44 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 44 [08/2020 - ]

  20. REMOVE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. for Bank 1:

      Remove the 3 bolts, cylinder head cover spacer, gasket and oil control valve filter.

    2. for Bank 2:

      Remove the 3 bolts, cylinder head cover spacer, gasket and oil control valve filter.

  21. REMOVE SPARK PLUG TUBE GASKET 
    1. Pry up the claws of the ventilation baffle plate.

      NOTE:

      Do not deform the claws of the ventilation baffle plate more than necessary.

    2. Using a screwdriver as shown in the illustration, deform each spark plug tube gasket inwards and remove the 8 spark plug tube gaskets from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
      NOTE:
      • As much as possible prevent the spark plug tube gaskets from being deformed.
      • Do not damage the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
      • Make sure not to damage the spark plug tube gasket and cylinder head cover sub-assembly when inserting the screwdriver in the joint area.

      HINT: 

      If the cylinder head cover sub-assembly is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

  22. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 9

  23. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 39 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 39 [08/2020 - ]

  24. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 46 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 46 [08/2020 - ]

  25. REMOVE WATER INLET PIPE 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 47 [08/2015 - 08/2020] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 47 [08/2020 - ]

  26. REMOVE FRONT CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL 
    1. Place the timing chain cover sub-assembly on wooden blocks.
    2. Place the oil pump on a wooden block.

    3. Using a screwdriver and wooden block, pry out the front crankshaft oil seal.
      NOTE:

      Do not damage the surface of the front crankshaft oil seal press fit hole.

      HINT: 

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  27. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION 
    1. Temporarily install the pulley set bolt.
    2. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise so that the timing marks on the crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gears are as shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      If the timing marks do not align, rotate the crankshaft clockwise again and align the timing marks.

    1. Remove the 2 cylinder block water jacket spacers from the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      NOTE:

      Be sure to remove the cylinder block water jacket spacers. If not, they may fall and become damaged when the cylinder block sub-assembly is inverted.

  55. REMOVE OIL RETURN PIPE GASKET 
    1. Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil return pipe gasket.

  56. REMOVE VENTILATION PIPE GASKET 
    1. Using a screwdriver, pry out the ventilation pipe gasket.

  57. REMOVE NO. 1 HEAT EXCHANGER COVER 
    1. Remove the 12 bolts and 2 nuts.

    2. Remove the No. 1 heat exchanger cover by prying between the No. 1 heat exchanger cover and cylinder block sub-assembly with a screwdriver.

  58. REMOVE NO. 2 OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 12 bolts and 2 nuts.

    2. Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the oil pans. Cut through the applied sealer and remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the oil pans.

  59. REMOVE NO. 1 OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 14 bolts and 2 nuts.

      HINT: 

      Be sure to clean the bolts and stud bolts and check the threads for cracks or other damage.

    2. Remove the No. 1 oil pan sub-assembly by prying between the No. 1 oil pan sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly with a screwdriver.

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder block sub-assembly and No. 1 oil pan sub-assembly.

  60. REMOVE NO. 1 OIL PAN BAFFLE PLATE 
    1. Remove the 7 bolts and No. 1 oil pan baffle plate.

  63. REMOVE REAR CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL 
    1. Place the rear engine oil seal retainer on wooden blocks.

    2. Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the rear crankshaft oil seal.
  64. REMOVE OIL DRAIN PIPE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt and oil drain pipe sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the O-ring.
  65. REMOVE RING PIN 
    NOTE:

    It is not necessary to remove a ring pin unless it is being replaced.

  66. REMOVE STUD BOLT 
    NOTE:

    If a stud bolt is deformed or its threads are damaged, replace it.
