Installation [09/2020 - ]: Procedure

  1. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Hold the rear axle carrier sub-assembly between aluminum plates in a vise.
      NOTE:

      Do not overtighten the vise.

    2. Install the rear axle hub and bearing assembly and rear disc brake dust cover sub-assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 75 N.m (765 kgf/cm, 55 ft.lbf) 

  2. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR 
    1. Set a new rear No. 1 wheel bearing dust deflector to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly while aligning the hole for the rear speed sensor in the rear No. 1 wheel bearing dust deflector with the hole of the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

    2. Using SST and a press, install the rear No. 1 wheel bearing dust deflector.
      • SST: 09950-70010 
        1. 09951-07150
      • SST: 09951-01000

  3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply TOYOTA body grease W to the entire contact surface between the rear drive shaft assembly and rear axle hub sub-assembly surface or only apply 0.1 to 0.3 g (0.00353 to 0.0105 oz.) of TOYOTA body grease W to the 4 areas on the axle hub bearing shown in the illustration.

    2. Install the rear axle assembly to the rear drive shaft assembly.

      *a Matchmark
      NOTE:

      Align the matchmarks on the rear drive shaft assembly and rear axle hub and bearing assembly.

  4. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 25 [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 25 [11/2021 - ]

  5. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 27 [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 27 [11/2021 - ]

  6. INSTALL REAR LOWER COIL SPRING INSULATOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1

  7. INSTALL REAR UPPER COIL SPRING INSULATOR 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 2

  8. INSTALL REAR COIL SPRING 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 3

  9. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 4

  10. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  11. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the rear No. 1 suspension arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.
      NOTE:

      Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut. Tighten the bolt with the nut secured.

      HINT: 

      Insert the bolt with the threaded end facing the front of the vehicle.

  12. INSTALL TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 5

  13. INSTALL REAR DISC 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [11/2021 - ]

  14. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install 2 rear No. 1 disc brake caliper plates to the rear disc brake caliper assembly.

      HINT: 

      The 2 rear No. 1 disc brake caliper plates can be reused while inspecting the rear axle hub and bearing assembly for looseness and runout. However, make sure to replace the 2 rear No. 1 disc brake caliper plates with new ones after the inspection is complete.

    2. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 125 N.m (1275 kgf/cm, 92 ft.lbf) 

  15. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Clean the threaded parts on the rear drive shaft assembly and a new rear axle shaft nut using non-residue solvent.
      NOTE:
      • Be sure to perform this work even when using a new rear drive shaft assembly.
      • Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign matter.
    2. Using a 32 mm socket wrench, while applying the brakes, temporarily install the rear axle shaft nut.

      Torque: 290 N.m (2957 kgf/cm, 214 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Stake the rear axle shaft nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.

      HINT: 

      Keep depressing the brake pedal to prevent the rear drive shaft assembly from rotating.

  16. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 

    See step  6

  17. REMOVE REAR DISC 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 15

  18. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS 

    See step  5

  19. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT 

    See step  6

  20. INSTALL REAR DISC 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to PROCEDURE - Step 1 [11/2021 - ]

  21. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install 2 new rear No. 1 disc brake caliper plates to the rear disc brake caliper assembly.
    2. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 125 N.m (1275 kgf/cm, 92 ft.lbf) 

  22. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the rear axle shaft nut.

  23. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE WIRE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the No. 2 parking brake wire assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.5 N.m (87 kgf/cm, 75 in.lbf) 

    2. Install the No. 2 parking brake wire assembly to the rear upper control arm assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.5 N.m (87 kgf/cm, 75 in.lbf) 

    3. Engage the 2 clamps.
    4. Connect the No. 2 parking brake wire assembly connector to the parking brake actuator assembly.
  24. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Install the rear speed sensor to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.5 N.m (87 kgf/cm, 75 in.lbf) 

      NOTE:
      • Keep the tip of the rear speed sensor and installation hole free of foreign matter.
      • Firmly insert the rear speed sensor body into the rear axle carrier sub-assembly before tightening the bolt.
      • After installing the rear speed sensor to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly, make sure that there is no clearance between the rear speed sensor stay and rear axle carrier sub-assembly. Also make sure that no foreign matter is stuck between the parts.
    2. Connect the rear speed sensor connector to the No. 2 parking brake wire assembly.
      NOTE:

      Do not twist the rear speed sensor wire harness when installing it.

  25. STABILIZE SUSPENSION 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 6

  26. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully tighten the rear upper control arm assembly nut.

      Torque: 190 N.m (1937 kgf/cm, 140 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Because the bolt has its own stopper, do not turn the bolt. Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.

  27. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully tighten the rear No. 1 upper control arm assembly bolt.

      Torque: 130 N.m (1326 kgf/cm, 96 ft.lbf) 

      NOTE:

      Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut. Tighten the bolt with the nut secured.

  28. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 7

  29. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  30. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 11

  31. INSTALL REAR HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ Height Control Sensor) 

    Refer to PROCEDURE - Step 12

  32. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Refer to INSTALLATION [09/2020 - 10/2023] , or refer to INSTALLATION [10/2023 - ]

  33. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT 

    Refer to ADJUSTMENT [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to ADJUSTMENT [11/2021 - ]

  34. CHECK FOR SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL 

    Refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE [09/2020 - 11/2021] , or refer to TEST MODE PROCEDURE [11/2021 - ]

  35. PERFORM INITIALIZATION 

    Refer to INITIALIZATION [09/2020 - ]

  36. ADJUST HEADLIGHT AIMING 

    Refer to ADJUSTMENT [09/2020 - ]
