Replacement [10/2017 - ]: Procedure

  1. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL 
    1. for Front Differential:
      1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface.
      2. Remove the front differential filler plug and gasket.

      3. Remove the front differential drain plug and gasket to drain the oil.

      4. Install a new gasket and the front differential drain plug.

        Torque: 39.2 N.m (400 kgf/cm, 29 ft.lbf) 

    2. for Rear Differential without LSD:
      1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface.
      2. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.

      3. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the rear differential drain plug and gasket to drain the oil.

      4. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential drain plug.

        Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf/cm, 36 ft.lbf) 

    3. for Rear Differential with LSD:
      1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface.
      2. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.

      3. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the rear differential drain plug and gasket to drain the oil.

      4. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential drain plug.

        Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf/cm, 36 ft.lbf) 

  2. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL 
    1. for Front Differential:
      1. Add differential oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) from the bottom lip of the differential filler plug opening.

        *a 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.196 in.)
        NOTE:
        • Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems.
        • After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again.

        Oil Type

        Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 or equivalent

        Recommended Viscosity

        Temperature Viscosity
        Above -18°C (0°F) SAE 90
        Below -18°C (0°F) SAE 80W or 80W-90

        Standard Differential Oil Capacity

        0.65 to 0.75 liters (0.69 to 0.79 US qts, 0.58 to 0.66 Imp. qts)

      2. Install a new gasket and the front differential filler plug.

        Torque: 39.2 N.m (400 kgf/cm, 29 ft.lbf) 

    2. for Rear Differential:
      1. Add differential oil and check that there is oil at the bottom lip of the differential filler plug hole.

        NOTE:
        • Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems.
        • After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again.

        Oil Type

        w/o LSD 

        Toyota genuine differential gear oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent

        w/ LSD 

        Toyota genuine differential gear oil LX 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent

        Standard Differential Oil Capacity

        1.30 to 1.40 liters (1.38 to 1.47 US qts, 1.15 to 1.23 Imp. qts)

      2. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential filler plug.

        Torque: 49 N.m (500 kgf/cm, 36 ft.lbf)
