Vehicle Speed Signal Circuit: Procedure

  1. CHECK ECM 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the N68 multi-media module receiver connector.
    3. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      N40-19 (+S) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      (to Combination Meter Assembly)

    NG → See step   10 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK MULTI-MEDIA MODULE RECEIVER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the A19 ECM connector.
    3. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      N40-19 (+S) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      (to Combination Meter Assembly)

    NG → See step   11 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      4B-5 - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      (to Cowl Side Junction Block RH)

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK TELEMATICS TRANSCEIVER (DCM) 
    NOTE:

    For vehicles without a telematics transceiver, proceed to the next step.

    1. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      4B-2 - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      (to Cowl Side Junction Block RH)

    NG → See step   13 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the 4C junction block connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      4C-33 - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 14 V

      (to Cowl Side Junction Block RH)

    NG → See step   14 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH) 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    3. Disconnect the A19 ECM connector.
    4. Disconnect the N68 multi-media module receiver connector.
    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N40-19 (+S) - 4B-3 Always Below 1 Ω
      N40-19 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH 
    1. Remove the cowl side junction block RH.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      4B-3 - 4B-5 Always Below 1 Ω
      4B-3 - 4B-2
      4B-3 - 4C-33

    NG → REPLACE COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the A13 brake actuator (skid control ECU) connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A16-11 (SP1) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V

      (to Brake Actuator Assembly [Skid Control ECU])

    NG → See step   15 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the combination meter assembly with the connector(s) connected.

    2. Connect an oscilloscope to terminal N40-20 (SI) and body ground.
    3. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below.
      MEASUREMENT CONDITION

      Item Condition
      Tester connection N40-20 (SI) - Body ground
      Tool setting 5 V/DIV., 20 ms/DIV.
      Vehicle condition Driving at approx. 20 km/h (12 mph)

      OK

      The waveform displayed is as shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      When the system is functioning normally, one wheel revolution generates 4 pulses. As the vehicle speed increases, the width indicated by (A) in the illustration narrows.

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the A19 ECM connector.
    3. Disconnect the N68 multi-media module receiver connector.
    4. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N40-19 (+S) - A19-24 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      N40-19 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   21 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - MULTI-MEDIA MODULE RECEIVER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the N68 multi-media module receiver connector.
    3. Disconnect the A19 ECM connector.
    4. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N40-19 (+S) - N68-56 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      N40-19 (+S) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   18 

  12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH - CERTIFICATION ECU [SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY]) 
    1. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the N93 certification ECU connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      4B-5 - N93-27 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      4B-5 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   17 

  13. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH - TELEMATICS TRANSCEIVER [DCM]) 
    1. Disconnect the 4B junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the N87 telematics transceiver connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      4B-2 - N87-10 (SPDP) Always Below 1 Ω
      4B-2 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   22 

  14. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COWL SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK RH - STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the 4C junction block connector.
    2. Disconnect the T40 stereo component amplifier assembly connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      4C-33 - T40-17 (SPD) Always Below 1 Ω
      4C-33 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   20 

  15. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY) 
    1. Disconnect the N40 combination meter assembly connector.
    2. Disconnect the A13 brake actuator assembly (skid control ECU) connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      N40-20 (SI) - A13-11 (SP1) Always Below 1 Ω
      N40-20 (SI) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   16 

  16. REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  17. REPLACE CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY). Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  18. REPLACE MULTI-MEDIA MODULE RECEIVER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  19. REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (SKID CONTROL ECU). Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  20. REPLACE STEREO COMPONENT AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  21. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ] 
  22. REPLACE TELEMATICS TRANSCEIVER (DCM). Refer to  REMOVAL [12/2011 - ]
