Electric Parking Brake does not Operate: Procedure

  1. VEHICLE OPERATION CHECK 
    1. Start the engine and move the shift lever to D. Then depress the brake pedal and push the electric parking brake switch to the lock side for 1 second. Check the parking brake indicator light (RED) condition.
    2. Release the brake pedal and check that the vehicle does not move.
    3. Depress the brake pedal and pull the electric parking brake switch to the release side for 1 second. Check the parking brake indicator light (RED) condition.
    4. Release the brake pedal and check that the vehicle moves.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      Lock and release control is normal; parking brake indicator light (RED) is off or is blinking A
      Lock and release control is malfunctioning; parking brake indicator light (RED) is illuminated or off depending on switch operation B
      Lock and release control is malfunctioning; parking brake indicator light (RED) is off or is blinking C

    A: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHT (RED) (ACTIVE TEST) 
    1. Turn the engine switch off.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Chassis / Electric Parking Brake / Active Test.
    5. Check the condition of the parking brake indicator light (RED) by operating the tester.
      ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE

      Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
      PKB Light Parking brake indicator light (RED) ON or OFF Vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph)

      OK

      Indicator light turns on when operating the tester.

      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      NG A
      OK B

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECU - METER)

    1. Disconnect the S46 ECU connector.
    2. Disconnect the L10 meter connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S46-7 (TX) - L10-24 (EPB)* Always Below 1 Ω
      S46-7 (TX) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      HINT: 

      *: Stands for electric parking brake

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   9 

  4. INSPECT FUSE (ECU-B2) 
    1. Remove the ECU-B2 fuse from engine room No. 2 relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      ECU-B2 fuse Always Below 1 Ω
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      NG A
      OK B

    B → See step   6 

    A: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BECU TERMINAL - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Disconnect the S48 ECU connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S48-2 (BECU) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → CHECK FOR SHORT IN ALL HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS CONNECTED TO FUSE AND REPLACE FUSE 

    OK → REPLACE FUSE 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECU - BATTERY) 
    1. Disconnect the S48 ECU connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      S48-2 (BECU) - Body ground Always 11 to 14 V

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   8 

  7. GO TO PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY. Refer to  INSPECTION 
  8. REPLACE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE ECU. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  9. GO TO METER / GAUGE SYSTEM. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING
