DTC P0300: Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected; DTC P0301: Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected; DTC P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected; DTC P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected; DTC P0304: Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected; DTC P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected; DTC P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected; DTC P0307: Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected; DTC P0308: Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO MISFIRE DTCS) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read DTCs.
      RESULT

      Display (DTC output) Proceed to
      P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 A
      P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 and other DTCs B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and P0308 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MISFIRE RPM AND MISFIRE LOAD) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Misfire / Misfire RPM and Misfire Load.
    4. Read and note the Misfire RPM and Misfire Load values.

      HINT: 

      The Misfire RPM and Misfire Load values indicate the vehicle conditions under which the misfire occurred.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Catalyst OT MF F/C.
    4. Read the valve displayed on the Techstream.
      RESULT

  4. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Prohibit the Catalyst OT Misfire Prevent F/C.
    4. Perform the Active Test.
      NOTE:

      When performing the Active Test, make sure the vehicle is stopped and either idling or being revved within 3000 rpm.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK VENTILATION HOSE (HOSE CONNECTIONS) 

    OK

    Ventilation hose is connected correctly and is not damaged.

    NG → See step   28 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT OF PORT INJECTION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Port. (Procedure "A")
    6. Allow the engine to idle.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Misfire / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the gear selector lever to the D position.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.
        RESULT

        Misfire count Proceed to
        1 or 2 cylinders have misfire counts A
        3 cylinders or more have misfire counts A
        There are no misfire counts B

  7. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT OF DIRECT INJECTION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct. (Procedure "A")
    6. Allow the engine to idle.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Misfire / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the gear selector lever to the D position.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.
        RESULT

  8. CHECK SPARK PLUG 
    1. Remove the ignition coil and the spark plug of the misfiring cylinder.
    2. Measure the spark plug electrode gap. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2 .

    NG → See step   29 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK FOR SPARK AND IGNITION 
    1. Disconnect the injector connectors, in order to prevent the engine from starting.
    2. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil.
    3. Attach the spark plug assembly to the cylinder head cover.
    4. Crank the engine for less than 2 seconds and check the spark.

      OK

      Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

    5. Reconnect the injector connectors.

    NG → See step   11 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE (MALFUNCTIONING CYLINDER) 
    1. Measure the cylinder compression pressure of the misfiring cylinder. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 6 .

    OK → See step   37 

    NG → CHECK ENGINE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF LOW COMPRESSION 

  11. CHANGE TO NORMAL SPARK PLUG AND CHECK SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 
    1. Change the installed spark plug to a spark plug that functions normally.
    2. Perform a spark test.
      WARNING:

      Always disconnect each injector connector.

      NOTE:

      Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.

      1. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil and connect the ignition coil connector.
      2. Disconnect the injector connector.
      3. Ground the spark plug.
      4. Check if sparks occur while the engine is being cranked.

        OK

        Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

    NG → See step   30 

    OK → See step   29 

  12. CHECK AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM 
    1. Check the air induction system for vacuum leakage.

      OK

      No leakage from air induction system.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM 

    OK: Go to next step 

  13. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp.
    5. Read the Data List twice, when the engine is both cold and warmed up.

      Standard

      With cold engine 

      Same as ambient air temperature.

      With warm engine 

      Between 75°C and 95°C (167°F and 203°F).

    NG → See step   32 

    OK: Go to next step 

  14. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MAF #1, MAF #2) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Primary / Engine Speed, Coolant Temp, MAF #1 and MAF #2.
    5. Allow the engine to idle until the ECT reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher.
    6. Read MAF #1 and MAF #2 with the engine speed at 2000 rpm.

      Standard

      Between 2.4 to 12.8 g/s (shift lever is in N position and A/C is OFF)

    NG → See step   22 

    OK: Go to next step 

  15. CHECK VALVE TIMING See step   3

  16. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE (LOW PRESSURE SIDE) 
    1. Check the fuel pressure (low pressure side). Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2 .

  17. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION 
    1. Check the fuel pump operation. Refer to INSPECTION .

    OK → CHECK AND REPLACE FUEL SYSTEM (PRESSURE REGULATOR, PIPE LINE AND FILTER)

  18. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT OF DIRECT INJECTION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs.
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct. (Procedure "A")
    6. Allow the engine to idle.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Misfire / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the gear selector lever to the D position.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.
        RESULT

  19. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Fuel Press.
    5. While revving the engine, check that the fuel pressure fluctuates.

      Standard

      Idling 

      3000 to 5000 kPa

      2000 rpm (No load) 

      7000 to 9000 kPa

      HINT: 

      The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be OFF, and the transmission gear selector lever should be in the N or P position, and the engine should be fully warmed up.

  20. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection way / Direct.

      HINT: 

      The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be OFF, and the transmission gear selector lever should be in the N or P position, and the engine should be fully warmed up.

    4. Read the value: Data List / A/F Control System / Short FT #1, Long FT #1, Short FT #2, Long FT #2 and Fuel Pump Duty (D4).
      RESULT

  21. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Misfire RPM, Misfire Load, Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count and Injection Way.
    6. Drive the vehicle with Misfire RPM and Misfire Load.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values or DTCs and Injection Way displayed on the Techstream.

  22. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Check the connection and terminal contact pressure of connectors and wire harnesses between the mass air flow meter and ECM. Refer to ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE .

      HINT: 

      Repair any problems.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  23. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the engine switch off.
    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    7. Start the engine and warm it up.
    8. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
    10. Input the DTC: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 or P0308.
    11. Check the DTC judgment result.
      RESULT

  24. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MASS AIR FLOW METER - ECM)

    1. Disconnect the E13 or E22 MAF meter connector.
    2. Disconnect the E1 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E13-1 (VG) - E1-25 (VG) Always Below 1 Ω
      E13-2 (E2G) - E1-24 (E2G) Always Below 1 Ω
      E22-1 (VGR) - E1-23 (VG2) Always Below 1 Ω
      E22-2 (EVGR) - E1-32 (E2G2) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short)

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  25. REPLACE MASS AIR FLOW METER 
    1. Replace the mass air flow meter. Refer to REMOVAL .

      HINT: 

      If the results of the inspections performed in steps 14 indicated no problem, proceed to the next step without replacing the mass air flow meter.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  26. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the engine switch off.
    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    7. Start the engine and warm it up.
    8. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
    10. Input the DTC: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 or P0308.
    11. Check the DTC judgment result.
      RESULT

  35. REPLACE FUEL PUMP. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  36. REPLACE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  37. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  38. REPLACE FUEL INJECTOR FOR PORT INJECTION (MISFIRING CYLINDER). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  39. REPLACE FUEL INJECTOR FOR DIRECT INJECTION (MISFIRING CYLINDER). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  40. REPLACE FUEL INJECTOR FOR PORT INJECTION. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  41. REPLACE FUEL INJECTOR FOR DIRECT INJECTION (MALFUNCTIONING CYLINDER INJECTOR). Refer to  REMOVAL 
  42. REPAIR OR REPLACE FUEL SYSTEM FOR HIGH PRESSURE (REFER TO DTC P0087 OR P0088). Refer to  DTC P0087: Fuel Rail / System Pressure - Too Low
