DTC P0300: Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected; DTC P0301: Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected; DTC P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected; DTC P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected; DTC P0304: Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected; DTC P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected; DTC P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected; DTC P0307: Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected; DTC P0308: Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected: Procedure

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO MISFIRE DTCS) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 are output A
      DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and P0308 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B → See step   48 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK PCV HOSE (HOSE CONNECTIONS) 
    1. Inspect the PCV hose. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

      OK

      PCV hose is connected correctly and is not damaged.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE PCV HOSE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MISFIRE RPM AND MISFIRE LOAD) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Misfire RPM and Misfire Load.
    4. Read and note the Misfire RPM and Misfire Load values.

      HINT: 

      The Misfire RPM and Misfire Load values indicate the vehicle conditions under which the misfire occurred.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT OF PORT INJECTION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Port. (Procedure "A")
    6. Allow the engine to idle.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the shift lever to D.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.

        Result

        Misfire count Proceed to
        There are no misfire counts A
        1 or 2 cylinders have misfire counts B
        3 cylinders or more have misfire counts B

    B → See step   7 

    A: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT OF DIRECT INJECTION 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct. (Procedure "A")
    6. Allow the engine to idle.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the shift lever to D.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.

        Result

        Misfire Count Proceed to

  6. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Misfire RPM, Misfire Load, Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count and Injection Way.
    6. Drive the vehicle with Misfire RPM and Misfire Load.
    7. Monitor all of the misfire count values or DTCs and Injection Way displayed on the Techstream.

      Result

  7. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct. (Procedure "A")

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure: (Procedure "B")

      1. Move the shift lever to D.
      2. Repeat procedure "A" to "B" above.
      3. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.

  8. CHECK SPARK PLUG 
    1. Inspect the spark plug. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2 .

  9. CHECK FOR SPARK AND IGNITION 
    1. Remove the ignition coil assemblies.
    2. Remove the spark plugs.
    3. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil.
    4. Disconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors.
    5. Disconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks from the 2 injector drivers.

    6. Attach the spark plug assembly to the cylinder head cover.
    7. Crank the engine for less than 2 seconds and check the spark.

      OK

      Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

    8. Reconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks to the 2 injector drivers.
    9. Reconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors.
    10. Reinstall the spark plugs.
    11. Reinstall the ignition coil assemblies.

    NG → See step   29 

    OK: Go to next step 

  10. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE (MALFUNCTIONING CYLINDER) 
    1. Measure the cylinder compression pressure of the misfiring cylinder. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 9 .

    NG → CHECK ENGINE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF LOW COMPRESSION 

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. CHECK VALVE CLEARANCE (MISFIRING CYLINDER) 
    1. Check the valve clearance. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

    NG → See step   58 

    OK: Go to next step 

  12. CHECK INTAKE SYSTEM 
    1. Check the intake system for vacuum leaks. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

      OK

      No leaks in the intake system.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE INTAKE SYSTEM 

    OK: Go to next step 

  13. INSPECT VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN). Refer to  PROCEDURE - Step 3 

    NG → See step   56 

    OK: Go to next step 

  14. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE (LOW PRESSURE SIDE) 
    1. Check the fuel pressure (low pressure side). Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2 .

  15. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Coolant Temp.
    5. Read the Data List twice, when the engine is both cold and warmed up.

      Standard

      With cold engine 

      Same as ambient air temperature.

      With warm engine 

      Between 75°C and 95°C (167°F and 203°F).

    OK: Go to next step 

  16. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MAF) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / MAF and Coolant Temp.
    5. Allow the engine to idle until Coolant Temp reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher.
    6. Read MAF with the engine speed at 3000 RPM.

      Standard

      Between 17 g/sec. and 23 g/sec. (shift lever: N; A/C: Off).

  17. CHECK INTAKE SYSTEM 
    1. Check the intake system for vacuum leaks. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

      OK

      No leaks in the intake system.

  23. CHECK FOR SPARK AND IGNITION 
    1. Remove the ignition coil assemblies.
    2. Remove the spark plugs.
    3. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil.
    4. Disconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors.
    5. Disconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks from the 2 injector drivers.

    6. Attach the spark plug assembly to the cylinder head cover.
    7. Crank the engine for less than 2 seconds and check the spark.

      OK

      Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

    8. Reconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks to the 2 injector drivers.
    9. Reconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors.
    10. Reinstall the spark plugs.
    11. Reinstall the ignition coil assemblies.

    NG → See step   29

  24. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE (MALFUNCTIONING CYLINDER) 
    1. Measure the cylinder compression pressure of the misfiring cylinder. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 9 .

    NG → CHECK ENGINE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF LOW COMPRESSION 

    OK: Go to next step 

  25. CHECK VALVE CLEARANCE (MISFIRING CYLINDER) 
    1. Check the valve clearance. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION .

  26. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE (LOW PRESSURE SIDE) 
    1. Check the fuel pressure (low pressure side). Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2 .

  27. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Fuel Press.
    5. While revving the engine, check that the fuel pressure fluctuates.

      Standard

      Idling 

      3000 to 5000 kPa

      2000 RPM (No load) 

      7000 to 9000 kPa

      HINT: 

      The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be OFF, and the shift lever should be in N or P, and the engine should be fully warmed up.

    NG → See step   33

  28. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct.

      HINT: 

      The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be OFF, and the shift lever should be in N or P, and the engine should be fully warmed up.

    4. Read the value.
      1. Enter the following menus: Data List / All Data / Short FT #1, Long FT #1, Short FT #2, Long FT #2 and Fuel Pump Duty (D4).

  29. CHANGE TO NORMAL SPARK PLUG AND CHECK SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 
    1. Change the installed spark plug to a spark plug that functions normally.
    2. Perform a spark test.
      WARNING:

      Always disconnect each injector connector.

      NOTE:

      Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.

      1. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil and connect the ignition coil connector.
      2. Disconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors..
      3. Disconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks from the 2 injector drivers.

      4. Ground the spark plug.
      5. Check if sparks occur while the engine is being cranked.

        OK

        Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

  30. CHANGE TO NORMAL IGNITION COIL AND SPARK OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 
    1. Change the installed ignition coil to a ignition coil that functions normally.
    2. Perform a spark test.
      WARNING:

      Always disconnect each injector connector.

      NOTE:

      Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.

      1. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil and connect the ignition coil connector.
      2. Disconnect the 2 fuel delivery pipe connectors.
      3. Disconnect the 4 connectors with wire harness locks from the 2 injector drivers.

      4. Ground the spark plug.
      5. Check if sparks occur while the engine is being cranked.

        OK

        Sparks jump across the electrode gap.

  31. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION 
    1. Check the fuel pump operation. Refer to ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1 .

  32. CHECK FUEL LINE 
    1. Check the fuel line for leakage and blockage.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE FUEL LINE 

    OK → CHECK AND REPLACE FUEL SYSTEM (FUEL PUMP, PRESSURE REGULATOR, FUEL LINE AND FILTER) 

  33. CHECK MISFIRE COUNT 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Way / Direct.
    5. Allow the engine to idle.
    6. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #8 Misfire Count.

      If no misfire counts occur for any of the cylinders, perform the following procedure:

      1. Move the shift lever to D.
      2. Monitor all of the misfire count values that are displayed on the Techstream.

        Result

        Misfire Count Proceed to
        No misfire counts, or misfire counts occur randomly in all cylinders A
        Misfire counts occur in particular cylinder B

  34. INSPECT INJECTOR DRIVER 
    1. Turn the engine switch off.
    2. Replace the No. 1 and No. 2 injector drivers with normal ones from another vehicle.
      NOTE:

      Do not disconnect and reconnect the connectors with the engine switch on (IG), as the injector driver (EDU) may be damaged.

    3. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    4. Start the engine.
    5. Clear DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    6. Perform the driving test.
    7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.
    8. Read the pending DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 and/or P0308 are output A
      DTC is not output B

  35. INSPECT FUEL RELIEF VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Start the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Fuel Press.
    5. Record the Fuel Press value.
    6. Turn the engine switch off.
    7. Wait for 10 seconds.
    8. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Fuel Press.
    10. Compare the Fuel Press value recorded with the engine running to the Fuel Press value currently shown on the Techstream.

      Result

  36. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Check the connection and terminal contact pressure of connectors and wire harnesses between the mass air flow meter and ECM. Refer to ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE .

      HINT: 

      Repair any problems.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  37. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the engine switch off.
    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    7. Start the engine and warm it up.
    8. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
    10. Input the DTC: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 or P0308.
    11. Check the DTC judgment result.
      RESULT

  38. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MASS AIR FLOW METER - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance between the terminals.

      Standard resistance (Check for Open)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E29-5 (VG) - E3-25 (VG) Always Below 1 Ω
      E29-4 (E2G) - E3-24 (E2G) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for Short)

    4. Reconnect the mass air flow meter connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  39. REPLACE MASS AIR FLOW METER 
    1. Replace the mass air flow meter assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

      HINT: 

      If the results of the inspections performed in steps 16 and 21 indicated no problem, proceed to the next step without replacing the mass air flow meter assembly.

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  40. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the engine switch off.
    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
    7. Start the engine and warm it up.
    8. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
    10. Input the DTC: P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307 or P0308.
    11. Check the DTC judgment result.
