Oil Temperature Gauge Malfunction: Procedure

  1. SYSTEM CHECK 
    1. Confirm the symptoms.

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge blinks. A
      All the bars in the engine oil temperature gauge blink and the oil temperature warning light comes on. B

    B → See step   5 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. INSPECT COMBINATION METER (CHECK FOR AN OPEN) 
    1. Check the combination meter operation.
      1. Disconnect the E60 connector.
      2. Connect terminals 1 and 2 of the combination meter connector on the wire harness side.

      3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

        Result

        Result Proceed to
        The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge does not blink. A
        The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge blinks. B
      4. Turn the engine switch off.

    B → See step   9 

    A: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR) 
    1. Disconnect the J34 connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J34-3 (GND) - E60-1 (OT-) Always Below 1 Ω
      J34-7 (GAGE) - E60-2 (OT+) Always Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR 
    1. Remove the engine oil temperature sensor.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 100°C (212°F) 1 kΩ
      1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 125°C (257°F) 0.5 kΩ

    NG → See step   8 

    OK → See step   9 

  5. INSPECT COMBINATION METER (OUTPUT VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the E60 engine oil temperature sensor connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E60-2 (OT+) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4 to 6 V

      Result

      Result Proceed to
      NG A
      OK B

    B → See step   7 

    A: Go to next step 

  6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR) 
    1. Disconnect the J34 connector.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      J34-3 (GND) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E60-2 (OT+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR 
    1. Remove the engine oil temperature sensor.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 0°C (32°F) 23.7 to 30.7 kΩ
      1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 125°C (257°F) 0.5 to 0.6 kΩ

    NG → See step   8 

    OK → See step   9 

  8. REPLACE ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  9. REPLACE COMBINATION METER. Refer to  REMOVAL - Step 9
