Inspection Procedure

HINT:

NOTE: DTCs P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when a foreign object in the engine oil enters the system. These codes will stay set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.
  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY TECHSTREAM (OCV OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and warm it up.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
    4. Using the tester, operate the OCV and check the engine speed.

      OK 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Operation Specified Condition
      OCV is OFF Normal engine speed
      OCV is ON Rough idle or engine stall

      NG:  Go to step  4

      OK: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY TECHSTREAM (OCV OPERATION) 
    1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2).
    2. Change the Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) and Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2) values to a value between - 100% to 100%.

      HINT:

      Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) and Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2) values should be added to the current OCV duty ratio.

    3. Confirm the current VVT angle by checking VVT Change Angle (Bank 1) and VVT Change Angle (Bank 2).

      OK: 

      Operation of Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2) leads to an immediate, linear change in the VVT angle. 

      NOTE:
      • With the engine idling and with the advanced camshaft timing (Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2) has a value of 0% to 100%), engine revolutions will be rough or the engine will stall.
      • When the vehicle is being driven, if the engine is turned off or the throttle valve is open, this Active Test will automatically be canceled.

      NG:  Go to step  4

      OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT REOCCURS 
    1. Select check mode.
    2. Start and warm up the engine.
    3. Drive the vehicle for 10 minutes or more.
    4. Check for the DTC.

      OK: 

      No DTC is output. 

      OK: END 

      NG: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING 
    1. Remove the engine cover.
    2. Remove the drive belt.
    3. Remove the timing belt cover LH and RH.
    4. Turn the crankshaft to align the matchmarks of the crankshaft.
    5. Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley with the "0" position.
    6. Confirm whether the matchmarks of the camshaft pulley and cylinder head cover are facing each other.
    7. If the matchmarks are not facing each other, turn the crankshaft clockwise by 360°. Confirm again if the matchmarks are facing each other.

      OK: 

      The matchmarks of the camshaft pulley and the cylinder head cover face each other when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position. 

      NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING

      OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Measure the resistance of the OCV.

      Standard resistance: 

      6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F) 

    2. Remove the OCV.
    3. Apply battery voltage to the terminals of the OCV.
    4. Check the valve operation.

      OK: 

      The valve moves quickly. 

      NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

      OK: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    2. Remove the camshaft bearing cap and OCV filter.
    3. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK: 

      The filter is not clogged. 

      NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

      OK: Go to next step 

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. After replacing the camshaft timing gear, check the DTC.
    2. Clear the DTC and select check mode (see CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
    3. Start and warm up the engine.
    4. Drive the vehicle for 10 minutes or more.
    5. Check that no DTC is output.

      NEXT: END
