Inspection Procedure
- READ OUTPUT DTC (SFI SYSTEM)
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBDII / ENGINE / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
- Read output DTC. (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR
)
Result:
DTCs are output
YES: GO TO DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
NO: GO TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK CRANKSHAFT PULLEY REVOLUTION (P POSITION)
- Turn the ignition switch off, move the shift lever to the P position, and lift up the vehicle.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley by hand to check if the crankshaft rotates.
OK:
The crankshaft rotates.
NG: Go to step 11
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HV CONTROL ECU - CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
- Disconnect the H31 connector from the HV control ECU.
- Disconnect the C3 crankshaft position sensor connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance (Check for open)

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
- Disconnect the C3 crankshaft position sensor connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSORTester Connection Specified Condition NE+ (C3-1) - NE- (C3-2) (Cold) 1,630 to 2,740 Ω NE+ (C3-1) - NE- (C3-2) (Warm) 2,065 to 3,225 Ω NOTE: "Cold" and "Warm" mean the temperature of the part to be inspected. The temperature range is -10 to 50°C for "Cold" and 50 to 100°C for "Warm".
NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- READ OUTPUT DTC (HV)
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/ MOBD / HV ECU / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES.
- Read output DTC. (See DTC CHECK / CLEAR )
- Confirm and record the DTCs, freeze frame data, and information for the HV system.
- CLEAR DTC (HV)
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/ MOBD / HV ECU / DTC INFO / CLEAR CODES.
- Clear the DTCs of the HV system.
- CHECK READY LIGHT ON
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/ MOBD / HV ECU / DATA LIST / MG1 REV and ENGINE SPD.
- Depress the brake pedal and put the vehicle into the READY-on state.
OK:
The READY light comes on.
HINT:
- If the READY light does not come on and the reading on the intelligent tester shows DTC P0A90-239 (HV transaxle input malfunction [shaft damaged]), or the READY light comes on and the Generator turns but the engine does not crank, replace the HV transaxle assembly.
- If this DTC (P0AF-238) is output, the HV battery may be dead and DTC P3000-388 or P3000-389 may be output. If any of them is output, the battery should be charged with the THS charger.
- Refer to the graph for data list confirmation of "MG1 REV" and "ENGINE SPD".ENGINE SPEED AND GENERATOR SPEED

NG: REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK ENGINE RACING
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/ MOBD / HV ECU / DATA LIST / MG1 REV and ENGINE SPD.
- While the READY light is on, depress the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds with the shift lever in the P position.
OK:
The engine revs up.
HINT:
If the engine does not rev up and the reading on the intelligent tester shows DTC P0A90-239 (HV transaxle input malfunction [shaft damaged]), or the Generator turns but the engine does not crank, replace the HV transaxle assembly.
NG: REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK CREEP MOVEMENT
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- Depress the brake pedal, move the shift lever to the D position, and release the brake pedal.
OK:
The wheels turn (creeping along).
HINT:
If the wheels do not turn and the reading on the intelligent tester shows DTC P0A90-602 (transaxle output malfunction), replace the HV transaxle assembly.
NG: REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
OK: GO TO NEXT STEP
- CHECK ENGINE ACCELERATION SPEED
- Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
- While driving at the vehicle speed of more than 6 mph (10 km/h), fully depress the accelerator pedal to raise the engine speed.
OK:
Engine speed increases smoothly.
HINT:
If the engine over-revs or the reading on the intelligent tester shows DTC 0A90-241 (transaxle input malfunction [torque limiter slipping]), replace the transmission input damper.
NG: REPLACE TRANSMISSION INPUT DAMPER ASSEMBLY
OK: PERFORM SIMULATION TEST. IF SYMPTOM IS NOT REPRODUCED, REPLACE ENGINE, HV TRANSAXLE AND HV CONTROL ECU
- CHECK FRONT TIRE REVOLUTION
- Lift up the vehicle.
- Move the shift lever to the N position with the ignition switch off.CAUTION: Do not put the vehicle into the READY-on state while performing this inspection. Be sure to turn the ignition switch off because the engine may start.
- Turn the crank pulley by hand to check if the front tires rotate.
OK:
The front tires do not rotate.
NG: CHECK AND REPAIR ENGINE
OK: REPLACE HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
