  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the tester ON.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code.
    4. Read the DTCs.

      HINT:

If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B: GO TO DTC CHART

    A: Go to Next Step

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OPERATE OCV)
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the tester ON.
    3. Put the engine in inspection mode (See CHECK MODE PROCEDURE  ).
    4. Warm up the engine.
    5. On the tester, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
    6. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

      OK

      Tester Operation Specified Condition
      OCV OFF Normal engine speed
OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON)

    NG: Go to step  4

    OK: Go to Next Step

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear the DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Switch the ECM (Included in HV control ECU) from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
    6. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    7. Read the DTCs using the tester.

      OK: No DTC output.

    NG: Go to step 4

    OK: END

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING BELT)
    1. Remove the cylinder head covers RH and LH.
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the timing belt cover.
    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the No. 3 timing belt cover as shown in the illustration.

If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.

OK: The timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.

    4. Reinstall the cylinder head cover.

    NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING

    OK: Go to Next Step

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV)
    1. Remove the OCV.
    2. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.

      Standard resistance:

      6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F)

    3. Apply positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and the negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK: Valve moves quickly.

    4. Reinstall the OCV.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

    OK: Go to Next Step

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
    1. Remove the oil control valve filter.

OK: The filter is not clogged.

NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

    OK: Go to Next Step

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY
  8. READ VALUE OF TECHSTREAM (CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT RECURS)
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear the DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and warm up.
    5. Switch the ECM (Included in HV control ECU) from normal mode to the check mode using the tester.
    6. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    7. Read the DTCs.

      Standard:

      No DTC output.

      HINT:

DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

    OK: SYSTEM OK

    NG: REPLACE HV CONTROL ECU
