Inspection Procedure
HINT:
DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.
HINT:
| Abnormal Bank | Advanced Timing Over (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range) | Retarded Timing Over (Valve Timing is Out of Specified Range) |
|---|---|---|
| Bank 1 | P0011 | P0012 |
| Bank 2 | P0021 | P0022 |
- If DTC P0011 or P0012 is output, check the left bank VVT system for intake side circuit (for Bank 1).
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder.
- If DTC P0021 or P0022 is output, check the right bank VVT system for intake side circuit (for Bank 2).
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
- CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
- Read DTCs.

RESULT REFERENCEResult Proceed to P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output A P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs are output B HINT:
If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
B: GO TO DTC CHART (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART )
A: Go to next Step
- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
- Warm up the engine.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
- Check the engine speed while operating the Camshaft Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.
OK
ACTIVE TESTOperation Specified Condition OCV OFF Normal engine speed OCV ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls NG: Go to step 4
OK: Go to next Step
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream.
- Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Read DTCs using the Techstream.
OK: No DTC output.
NG: Go to step 4
OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )
- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TOOTH OF TIMING CHAIN)
- Remove the cylinder head cover LH and RH.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover.
- Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears and camshaft timing exhaust gears are at the positions shown in the illustration.
OK: Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.
NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING (See INSTALLATION )
OK: Go to next Step
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
- Remove the OCV.
- Measure the resistance according to the value (s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1-2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 Ω - Check the valve operation.
OK
MEASUREMENT CONDITION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTMeasurement Condition Specified Condition No battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 → Battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Valve moves quickly NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to next Step
- INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
- Remove the OCV filter (See DISASSEMBLY ).
- Check that the filter is not clogged.
OK: Filter is not clogged.
NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK: Go to next Step
- REPLACE INTAKE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR
- Replace the intake camshaft timing gear (See REMOVAL ).
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream.
- Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
- Read the output DTCs using the Techstream.
OK: No DTC is output.
HINT:
DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
NG: REPLACE ECM (See ECM )
OK: SYSTEM OK
