      HINT:

If any DTCs other than P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B: GO TO DTC CHART  (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART )

    A: Go to next step

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM (OCV FOR EXHAUST SIDE OPERATION)
    1. Put the engine in inspection mode (see INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE ).
    2. Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Warm up the engine.
    5. Enter the following menus.
      1. Intelligent tester - Select. DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST/ VVT EX B1 or VVT EX B2.
      2. Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2).
    6. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

      OK

      TESTER OPERATION AND ENGINE CONDITION

      Tester Operation Engine Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      30% Engine idles roughly

    NG:  Go to step  4

    OK: Go to next step

  3. CONFIRM WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 OR P0025)
    1. Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch ON (IG) and turn the tester ON
    3. Clear DTCs (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
    4. Turn the power switch ON (READY)
    5. Warm up the engine
    6. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester (see CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
    7. With the engine warmed up, idle it for 1 minute. Then drive the vehicle for 5 minutes
    8. Read DTCs using the tester

      OK: No DTC output.

    NG: Go to step 4

    OK: END

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)  (See INSPECTION PROCEDURE  )

NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING  (See REASSEMBLY )

    OK: Go to next step

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
    1. Remove the OCV (see REMOVAL ).

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard resistance

      STANDARD RESISTANCE

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Conditions
      1-2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7 9 Ω
    3. Apply positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK: Valve moves quickly.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly (See DISASSEMBLY ).
    2. Remove the OCV filter (See DISASSEMBLY ).
    3. Inspect the OCV filter.

      OK: Filter is not clogged.

NG: REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER  (See DISASSEMBLY )

    OK: Go to next step

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY
    1. Replace the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly (see REMOVAL )
  8. CONFIRM WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
    1. Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the power switch ON (IG) and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear DTCs (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
    4. Turn the power switch ON (READY).
    5. Warm up the engine
    6. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester (see CHECK MODE PROCEDURE ).
    7. With the engine warmed up, idle it for 1 minute. Then drive the vehicle for 5 minutes.
    8. Read output DTCs using the intelligent tester or Techstream.

      OK: No DTC output.

      HINT:

DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

NG: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: SYSTEM OK
