Steering Wheel: Removal

CAUTION: Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing (See PRECAUTION ).
  1. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS TO FACE STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
    NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
  3. REMOVE LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER  (See REMOVAL )
  4. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER  (See REMOVAL )
  5. REMOVE STEERING PAD  (See REMOVAL )
  6. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
    2. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft.
    3. disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable.

    4. Install SST to the steering wheel assembly as shown in the illustration.

      SST 09950-50013 (09951 -05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) 

      NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use.

    5. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.

  7. REMOVE STEERING SHAKE DAMPER 
    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2. Remove the steering shake damper from the steering wheel assembly.
  8. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  9. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )
  10. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH WIRE

  11. REMOVE SHIFT PADDLE SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )
  12. REMOVE LOWER STEERING WHEEL BOSS COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 screws.

    2. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering wheel boss cover from the steering wheel sub-assembly.

  13. REMOVE STEERING PAD ATTACHING SCREW 
    1. Remove the 2 steering pad attaching screws from the lower steering wheel boss cover.
