Inspection Procedure

- SYSTEM CHECK
- Confirm the symptoms.
Result
RESULT CHARTResult Proceed to The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge blinks. A All the bars in the engine oil temperature gauge blink and the oil temperature warning light comes on B
B: Go to step 3
A: Go to next step
- Confirm the symptoms.
- INSPECT COMBINATION METER (CHECK FOR AN OPEN)
- Check the combination meter operation
- Disconnect the E60 connector
- Connect terminals 1 and 2 of the combination meter connector on the wire harness side.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG).
Result
RESULT CHARTResult Proceed to The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge does not blink A The lowest bar in the engine oil temperature gauge blinks. B - Turn the engine switch off
B: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See REMOVAL )
A: Go to next step
- Check the combination meter operation
- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER - ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR)
- Disconnect the J34 connector.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition J34-3 (GND) - E60-1 (OT-) Always Below 1 Ω J34-7 (GAGE) - E60-2 (OT+) Always Below 1 Ω
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK: Go to next step
- INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR
- Remove the engine oil temperature sensor.
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance

NG: REPLACE ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR (See ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR )
OK: REPLACE COMBINATION METER (See REMOVAL )
- INSPECT COMBINATION METER (OUTPUT VOLTAGE)
- Disconnect the E60 engine oil temperature sensor connector
- Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below

- Disconnect the J34 connector
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition J34-3 (GND) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher E60-2 (OT+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK: Go to next step
- INSPECT ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR
- Remove the engine oil temperature sensor
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below
Standard Resistance
TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHARTTester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 0°C (32°F) 23.7 to 30.7 kΩ 1 (OT-) - 2 (OT+) Oil temperature is 125°C(257°F) 0.5 to 0.6 kΩ HINT.
