Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Lexus IS F. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

HINT.

If there is an open or short in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit, the ECM will store the DTCs.

Perform troubleshooting of the SFI System (See DTC P0115 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION; DTC P0117 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT LOW INPUT; DTC P0118 ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT (for 2UR-GSE)).

  1. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
    1. Check if CAN communication DTC is output (See DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM )

      Result

      RESULT CHART

      Condition Proceed to
CAN communication DTC is not output A
CAN communication DTC is output B

B: GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    A: Go to next step

  2. CHECK MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
    1. Check if Multiplex communication DTC is output (See DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM )

      Result

      RESULT CHART

      Condition Proceed to
Multiplex communication DTC is not output A
Multiplex communication DTC is output B

B: GO TO MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM  (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING )

    A: Go to next step

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (WATER TEMPERATURE METER OPERATION)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG)
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus. Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.
    5. Check the operation by referring to the values in the table below

      Combination Meter

      DIAGNOSTIC NOTE

Tester Display Test Part Control Range Diagnostic Note
Water Temperature Meter Operation Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge Low, Normal, Hi Confirm that the vehicle is stopped, engine idling

OK: Engine coolant temperature receiver gauge indication is normal.

NG: REPLACE COMBINATION METER  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: Go to next step

  4. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (COOLANT TEMP)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
    5. Check the values by referring to the values in the table below.

      Engine and ECT

      DIAGNOSTIC NOTE

Tester Display Measurement Item/Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Coolant Temp Engine coolant temperature/Min -40°C (-40°F), Max 140°C (284°F) After warming up 80 to 100°C (176 to 212°F) -

OK: Engine coolant temperature value displayed on the Techstream is almost the same as actual engine coolant temperature.

NG: GO TO SFI SYSTEM (for 2UR-GSE)  (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART )

    OK: Go to next step

  5. REPLACE COMBINATION METER
    1. Replace the combination meter with a new or a known good one (See REMOVAL  )

OK: The operation of the combination meter returns to normal.

NG: REPLACE ECM (for 2UR-GSE)  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: END
