Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Lexus IS 350. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

HINT:

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV) 
    1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the tester on.
    3. Warm up the engine.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
    5. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

      OK 

      TESTER OPERATION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Operation Specified Condition
      OCV OFF Normal engine speed
      OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON)

    NG: Go to step 2 

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the OCV connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.

      Standard resistance 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 Ω
    3. Reconnect the OCV connector.

    NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - OCV) 
    1. Disconnect the OCV connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value (s) the table below.

      Standard resistance (check for open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      OE1+ (E3-9) - E21-1 Below 1 Ω
      OE1- (E3-8) - E21-2 Below 1 Ω
      OE2+ (E5-24) - E31-1 Below 1 Ω
      OE2- (E5-23) - E31-2 Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (check for short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      OE1+ (E3-9) or E21-1 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      OE1- (E3-8) or E21-2 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      OE2+ (E5-24) or E31-1 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      OE2- (E5-23) or E31-2 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the OCV connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM
