Inspection Procedure

HINT:
- The Techstream only:
By using the Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 2) Active Test, it can be determined if the VVT-iE system is malfunctioning.
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream ON
- Start the engine and warm it up
- Enter the following menus. Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT-iE Linear (Bank 2)
- Monitor VVT-iE Aim Angle (Bank 1) and VVT Change Angle (Bank 1) or VVT-iE Aim Angle (Bank 2) and VVT Change Angle (Bank 2)
- Perform the Active Test operation with the engine speed at 1500 rpm.

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS CHARTActive Test Movement Order Difference between "VVT-iE Aim Angle" and "VVT Change Angle" 0 deg → 10 deg → 20 deg → 40 deg → 10 deg → 0 deg → 10 deg h-END Within 5°FR - When viewed from the rear of the engine assembly, Bank 1 is on the left side and Bank 2 is on the right side
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction
- CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0012 OR P0022)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
- Turn the engine switch on (IG).
- Turn the Techstream ON
- Enter the following menus" Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
- Read the DTCs
Result
RESULT CHARTResult Proceed to DTC P0012 or P0022 is output A DTC P0012 or P0022 and other DTCs are output B HINT
If any DTCs other than P0012 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
NG: GO TO DTC CHART (See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART )
OK: Go to next step
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY (BANK 1 AND/OR BANK 2)
- Remove the camshaft timing control motor (See REMOVAL ).
- Check if the camshaft timing gear assembly eccentric shaft rotates smoothly
OK: Rotates smoothly
- Reinstall the camshaft timing control motor
NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY (BANK 1 AND/OR BANK 2) (See REMOVAL )
OK: Go to next step
- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING CONTROL MOTOR (BANK 1 AND/OR BANK 2)
- Replace the camshaft timing control motor for bank 1 and/or bank 2 (See REMOVAL )
- CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG)
- Turn the Techstream ON
- Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR )
- Start the engine
- Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream (See CHECK MODE PROCEDURE )
- Drive the vehicle in an urban area for approximately 5 minutes
- Enter the following menus. Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes
- Read the DTCs.
