Inspection Procedure

HINT

  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream ON
    3. Enter the following menus Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Engine Speed
    4. Star the engine
    5. Read the values displayed on the Techstream while the engine is running

      Standard: Correct values are displayed. 

      HINT

      • To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the Techstream
      • If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking
      • If the engine speed indicated on the Techstream remains zero (O), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit

    B: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS  (See CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS )

    A: Go to Next Step 

  2. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (SENSOR POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard Voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      z4-3 (VC) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) 4.5 to 5 0 V
    3. Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

    NG: Go to step  8

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      Z4-1 (NE) - E3-27 (NE+) Always Below 1 Ω
      Z4-2 (NE-) - E3-34 (NE-) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      z4-1 (NE) or E3-27 (NE+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      z4-2 (NE-) or E3-34 (NE-) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ, or higher
    4. Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector and ECM connector

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  4. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR) 
    1. Check the crankshaft position sensor installation

      OK: Sensor is installed correctly.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  5. CHECK CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR PLATE (TEETH OF SENSOR PLATE) 
    1. Check the teeth of the sensor plate.

      OK: Sensor plate does not have any crack or deformation. 

    NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT ANGLE SENSOR ROTOR  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Replace the crankshaft position sensor (See REMOVAL )
  7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0335, P0337, P0338 AND/OR P0339) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
    3. Turn the Techstream ON.
    4. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR )
    5. Start the engine
    6. Enter the following menus Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes
    7. Read the DTCs

      Result 

      RESULT CHART

      Display (DTC Output) Proceed to
      No output A
      P0335, P0337, P0338 and/or P0339 B

      HINT.

      If the engine does not start, replace the ECM

    B: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

    A: END 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      z4-3(VC) - E3-18(VC) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard Resistance (Check for Short) 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      z4-3(VC) or E3-18(VC) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector and ECM connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )
