Cylinder Head Gasket: Installation

  1. INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT  (See INSPECTION )
  2. INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD GASKET (for Bank 1) 
    1. Place a new No 2 cylinder head gasket the cylinder block surface with the Lot No. stamp facing upward

      NOTE:
      • Be sure to place the gasket in the correct direction.
      • Gently place the cylinder head on the cylinder block in order to prevent damaging the gasket.
  3. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Bank 1) 
    1. Place the cylinder head sub- assembly on the cylinder block
      NOTE:
      • Clean and degrease all contact surface.
      • Inspect and clean each cylinder head bolt and installation hole.
    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head bolts

      HINT

      Tighten the cylinder head bolts in 3 progressive steps

    3. Step 1.
      1. Using a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench, install and uniformly tighten the 10 cylinder head bolts with the plate washers in several steps, in the sequence shown in the illustration

        Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf)

    4. Step 2.
      1. Mark each cylinder head bolt head with paint as shown in the illustration
      2. Tighten the cylinder head bolts another 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.
    5. Step 3
      1. Tighten the cylinder head bolts by an additional 90° in the sequence shown in step 1
      2. Check that the painted marks are now facing rearward.

    6. Install the 2 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

    7. Place the camshaft housing on the cylinder head sub-assembly
    8. Temporarily tighten the camshaft housing with the 3 bolt in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

    9. Fully tighten the 3 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration

      Torque: 24 N*m (245 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf)

  4. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD GASKET (for Bank 2) 
    1. Place a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder block surface with the Lot No. stamp facing upward.
      NOTE:
      • Be sure to place the gasket in the correct direction.
      • Gently place the cylinder head onto the cylinder block in order to prevent damaging the gasket.
  5. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Bank 2) 
    1. Place the cylinder head sub-assembly on the cylinder block.
      NOTE:
      • Clean and degrease all contact surface.
      • Inspect and clean each cylinder head bolt and installation hole.

    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head bolts

      HINT.

      Tighten the cylinder head bolts in 3 progressive steps.

    3. Step 1.

    4. Step 2.
      1. Mark each cylinder head bolt head with paint as shown in the illustration.
      2. Tighten the cylinder head bolts another 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.
    5. Step 3.
      1. Tighten the cylinder head bolts by an additional 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.
      2. Check that the painting marks are now facing rearward

    6. Install the 2 cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

    7. Place the camshaft housing on the cylinder head sub-assembly.
    8. Temporarily tighten the camshaft housing with the 3 bolt in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) 

    9. Fully tighten the 3 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Torque: 24 N*m (245 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf)

  6. INSTALL NO. 1 VALVE ROCKER ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  7. INSTALL FUEL INJECTOR ASSEMBLY (for Direct Injection) 

    INSTALLATION

  8. INSTALL NO. 3 CAMSHAFT
