Inspection Procedure

HINT:

ADVANCED TIMING OVER REFERENCE

Abnormal bank Advanced timing over (Valve timing is out of specified range) Retarded timing over (Valve timing is out of specified range)
Bank 1 P0011 P0012
Bank 2 P0021 P0022
  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST BY TECHSTREAM (OCV OPERATION) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and warm it up.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/Engine and ECT/Active Test/Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
    4. Using the Techstream, operate the Oil Control Valve (OCV) and check the engine speed.

      Standard 

      TESTER OPERATION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Operation Specified Condition
      OCV is OFF Normal engine speed
      OCV is ON Rough idle or engine stall

      HINT:

      DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is also output when a foreign object is detected in some parts of the system in the engine oil, and then the system returns to normal in a short time. As the ECM is controlled to eject a foreign object, there is no problem with the VVT. There is also no problem with the VVT as the oil filter should catch the foreign object in the engine oil.

    OK: VVT SYSTEM OK 

    NG: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TOOTH OF TIMING BELT) 
    1. Check the valve timing (See INSTALLATION ).

    NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM) 
    1. Inspect using an oscilloscope
    2. During idling, check the waveform between the specified terminals of the E7 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      The correct waveform is as shown. 

    NG: REPLACE ECM

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the V-bank cover.
    2. Remove the air cleaner inlet and intake air connector.
    3. Disconnect the C19 and C20 Oil Control Valve (OCV) connectors.
    4. Measure the resistance of the OCV

      Standard resistance: 

      6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F) 

    5. Reconnect the OCV connector.
    6. Reinstall the air cleaner inlet and intake air connector.
    7. Reinstall the V-bank cover.

    NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the timing belt (See REMOVAL ).
    2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    3. Remove the OCV.
    4. Drain the oil in the VVT controller assembly.
    5. Check whether the oil in VVT controller assembly is drained or not.

      Standard: 

      The oil in VVT controller assembly is drained. 

    6. Reinstall the OCV.
    7. Reinstall the cylinder head cover.
    8. Reinstall the timing belt.

    OK: Go to step  7

    NG: Go to next step 

  6. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
  7. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover (See REMOVAL )
    2. Remove the camshaft bearing cap and OCV filter.
    3. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK: The filter is not clogged. 

    4. Reinstall the camshaft bearing cap and OCV filter.
    5. Reinstall the cylinder head cover.

    NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear the DTCs.
    4. Start the engine and warm it up
    5. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
    6. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    7. Read output DTCs using the tester.

      Standard: 

      No DTC output. 

      HINT.

      DTC P0011 or P0012 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

    OK: SYSTEM OK 

    NG: REPLACE ECM
