Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

  1. CHECK FOR SPARKS AND CHECK SPARK PLUG OF MISFIRING CYLINDER 

    HINT:

    (See step  6 under DTC P0300 Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected; DTC P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected; DTC P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected; DTC P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected; DTC P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected; DTC P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected; DTC P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected  )

    NG: Go to step  4

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGF1 SIGNAL TERMINAL)) 
    1. Disconnect the I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 or I7 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Disconnect the E8 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance: 

      Check for open 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGF (I2-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (I3-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (I4-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (I5-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (I6-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω
      IGF (I7-2) - IGF1 (E8-24) Below 1 Ω

      Check for short 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGF (I2-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (I3-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (I4-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (I5-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (I6-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGF (I7-2) or IGF1 (E8-24) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (IGF1 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E8 and E7 ECM connectors.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGF1 (E8-24) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 to 5.5 V
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - ECM (IGT SIGNAL TERMINAL)) 
    1. Disconnect the I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 or I7 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Disconnect the E8 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance: 

      Check for open 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGT (I2-3) - IGT1 (E8-8) Below 1 Ω
      IGT (I3-3) - IGT2 (E8-9) Below 1 Ω
      IGT (I4-3) - IGT3 (E8-10) Below 1 Ω
      IGT (I5-3) - IGT4 (E8-11) Below 1 Ω
      IGT (I6-3) - IGT5 (E8-12) Below 1 Ω
      IGT (I7-3) - IGT6 (E8-13) Below 1 Ω

      Check for short 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGT (I2-3) or IGT1 (E8-8) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT (I3-3) or IGT2 (E8-9) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT (I4-3) or IGT3 (E8-10) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT (I5-3) or IGT4 (E8-11) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT (I6-3) or IGT5 (E8-12) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      IGT (I7-3) or IGT6 (E8-13) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  5. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5 OR IGT6 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E8 and E7 ECM connectors.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGT1 (E8-8) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT2 (E8-9) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT3 (E8-10) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT4 (E8-11) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT5 (E8-12) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V
      IGT6 (E8-13) - E1 (E7-1) 0.1 to 4.5 V

    NG: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  6. INSPECT ECM (IGT1, IGT2, IGT3, IGT4, IGT5 OR IGT6 VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 or I7 ignition coil connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E8 and E7 ECM connectors.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      IGT1 (E8-8) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT2 (E8-9) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT3 (E8-10) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT4 (E8-11) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT5 (E8-12) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
      IGT6 (E8-13) - E1 (E7-1) 4.5 V or more
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil connector.

    NG: REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL  )

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  7. INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 or I7 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance: 

      Check for open 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      GND (I2-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (I3-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (I4-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (I5-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (I6-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
      GND (I7-4) - Body ground Below 1 Ω
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the wire harness side connector.

      Standard voltage 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      +B (I2-1) - GND (I2-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (I3-1) - GND (I3-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (I4-1) - GND (I4-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (I5-1) - GND (I5-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (I6-1) - GND (I6-4) 9 to 14 V
      +B (I7-1) - GND (I7-4) 9 to 14 V
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.

    NG: Go to step 8 

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )

  8. INSPECT IG2 RELAY 
    1. Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room R/B.
    2. Measure the IG2 relay resistance.

      Standard resistance 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 Bellow 1 Ω (when battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2)
    3. Reinstall the IG2 relay.

    NG: REPLACE IG2 RELAY

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  9. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH) 
    1. Disconnect the I2, I3, I4, I5, I6 or I7 ignition coil with igniter connector.
    2. Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room R/B.
    3. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance: 

      Check for open 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      +B (I2-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω
      +B (I3-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω
      +B (I4-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω
      +B (I5-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω
      +B (I6-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω
      +B (I7-1) - IG2 relay terminal (3) Below 1 Ω

      Check for short 

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      +B (I2-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      +B (I3-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      +B (I4-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      +B (I5-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      +B (I6-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      +B (I7-1) or IG2 relay terminal (3) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the ignition coil with igniter connector.
    5. Reinstall the IG2 relay connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IG2 RELAY - BATTERY) 
    1. Inspect the INJ fuse.
      1. Remove the INJ fuse from the fusible link.
      2. Measure the INJ fuse resistance.

        Standard resistance: 

        Below 1 Ω 

      3. Reinstall the INJ fuse.
    2. Check the harness and connector between the IG2 relay and positive battery terminal.
      1. Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room R/B.
      2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
      3. Disconnect the battery positive terminal.
      4. Measure the resistance between the terminals.

        Standard resistance (check for open) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        IG2 relay terminal (5) - Battery positive terminal Below 1 Ω

        Standard resistance (check for short) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        IG2 relay terminal (5) or Battery positive terminal - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher
      5. Reconnect the battery positive terminal.
      6. Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
      7. Reinstall the IG2 relay.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to Next Step 

  11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - BODY GROUND) 
    1. Inspect the IG2 fuse.
      1. Remove the IG2 fuse from the instrument panel J/B.
      2. Measure the IG2 fuse resistance.

        Standard resistance: 

        Below 1 Ω 

      3. Reinstall the IG2 fuse.
    2. Check the harness and connector between the IG2 relay and ignition switch.
      1. Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room R/B.
      2. Disconnect the I14 ignition switch connector.
      3. Measure the resistance between the terminals.

        Standard resistance (check for open) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        IG2 (I14-6) - IG2 relay terminal (1) Below 1 Ω

        Standard resistance (check for short) 

        TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION

        Tester Connection Specified Condition
        IG2 (I14-6) or IG2 relay terminal (1) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: REPLACE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
